Zootopia Spinoff Series Zootopia+ Gets Disney+ Release Date

In 2016, Disney brought audiences to the colorful and wild world of Zootopia, and they loved it! With the film’s raving success, and a unique world just ripe for another dive, it’s only natural that Disney would want to bring us right back. This time it will be in the form of a Disney+ original series called Zootopia+ that is coming November 9th.

Zootopia was a buddy cop movie that followed the city’s first bunny cop, Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin). When predator animals begin to mysteriously turn savage, Judy discovers the hints at an underlying conspiracy. After roping in the sly Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman), the two trek through all corners of the city’s underbelly to find a way to save it! The film was a hit, reaching one of the highest-grossing releases of 2016. Critics and audiences alike praised the movie for its story as well as its mature themes.

Zootopia+ will be promising more layers to the colorful world inhabited by anthropomorphic animals. One of the praised details about the city itself is that there is a district for just about every ecosystem, whether you like an arctic climate, rainforest, savannah, or more! With such a varied cast, we only had so much time to get to know them while following Judy and Nick. This is where Zootopia+ will come in. The series will be an anthology that will dedicate an episode to a different character, with each episode promising its own unique style per episode.

What we Know of Zootopia+

From the looks of the teaser image that Joaquin Baldwin (Director of Cinematography – Layout) shared earlier, it looks like we’ll be following everyone from Judy’s parents, to Flash the sloth! Underneath, Baldwin also tweeted a series of emojis that seem to give us a hint of what’s to come for each episode.

Ahead of its release, Disney premiered one of the shorts at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. The episode, The Godfather of the Bride, focused on the one and only Mr. Big. The mafia boss shrew was one of the most memorable moments of the original movie, and the short gives audiences his special origin story on the day of his daughter’s wedding. Rafael Motamayor of /Film tweeted that the short was the highlight of the entire showcase.

Zootopia+ is slated to premiere on November 9th. The show is set to be one of the many new series projects from Disney, the first will be the Big Hero 6 spinoff, Baymax! Included with the two will be Tiana, which is a spinoff of The Princess and the Frog, and Moana: The Series. The latter two have yet to announce release dates.

As of now, there is no news on whether or not the cast of the original movie, including Idris Elba, Octavia Spencer, Maurice LaMarche, Jenny Slate, Raymond S. Persi, and more, will be reprising their roles. But it is confirmed that Trent Corey (Frozen II) and Josie Trinidad (writer of Zootopia) will be overseeing Zootopia+.
