Zach Braff’s A Good Person: Plot, Cast, and Everything Else We Know

Actor Zach Braff has set his next directing project on the dramatic feature A Good Person. The film will hit theaters early next year and features some familiar faces.

Braff is no stranger to the director’s chair, first stepping into it with 2004’s Garden State. The Scrubs lead also directed several episodes of the iconic medical comedy and an episode of Ted Lasso in 2020. After a brief hiatus, A Good Person will mark the actor’s first directed feature since 2017. Braff has stated that he wants to continue to direct whenever his schedule allows it. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Braff explained:

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

I’d like to do more. I just kind of, for better, for worse, I just go where the wind takes me… And then the pandemic happened and I wrote this screenplay. And then that came together.”

If all goes well with this next venture, we could see Braff return to the director’s chair more often. With that in mind, let’s look at everything we know about A Good Person. Who has Braff lined up in the cast? What can we expect from the story? When and where will the film be released? And what else should audiences know about Zach Braff’s A Good Person?

A Good Person: The Plot

Lionsgate

Not much is known about the plot at this point. Per Deadline, we have a general idea of what we can expect from the story, with the synopsis being:

“Allison, whose life falls apart after her involvement in a fatal accident. In the following years, it is the unlikely relationship she forms with her would-be father-in-law that helps her inevitably live a life worth living.”

From that, we can gather that the film will be a drama focused on issues of family and self-discovery. We can likely expect the lead character to overcome her tragedy with the help of those around her, learning more about herself in the process. This is consistent with Braff’s earlier works, such as Garden State, Wish I Was Here, and Going in Style. The plot seems to most resemble Braff’s directorial debut, Garden State. In that film, Braff’s lead character returned home after the death of his mother and worked to rebuild his life after years of depression and drug dependency. Perhaps A Good Person is Braff’s way of calling back to his earlier days in order to bring his career full circle.

These films generally deal with tragedy and loss, where the main character has to find themselves and learn something about the world. It’s safe to say this is a different strategy than was utilized by Braff’s sitcom Scrubs. While plot information is still admittedly light, it’s safe to say that audiences who enjoy Braff’s earlier body of work should find something to like here. More detailed plot information should follow as we approach the release date.

A Good Person: The Cast

Marvel Studios

Braff has a stacked cast lined up for his next directorial venture. The lead character Allison is played by actor Florence Pugh, who has been in a relationship with Braff since 2019. Allison’s would-be father-in-law is none other than Morgan Freeman himself. Braff previously directed Freeman in 2017’s Going in Style, alongside fellow icons Michael Caine and Alan Arkin. Still, names like Freeman and Pugh are quite a draw and will likely attract a big audience.

In addition to the lead roles of Pugh and Freeman, we know who will be rounding out the supporting cast. Saturday Night Live alum Molly Shannon is set to join Pugh and Freeman, though her role is unknown as of now. Ghostbusters: Afterlife star Celeste O’Connor is playing high school soccer player Ryan, whose world was also flipped upside down by the same accident in which Allison was involved.

Life in Pieces star Zoe Lister-Jones is Simone, a street-smart, hardened Alcoholics Anonymous veteran who has overcome many hurdles to get to a good place in her own life. Finally, Dickinson star Chinaza Uche is playing Nathan, who is also trying to create a new life for himself after moving on from childhood abuse and trauma.

Aside from Pugh and Freeman, the remainder of the cast is new to Braff’s work. However, given the high caliber of the names, we can reasonably expect another successful outing from the actor-director. These are all the confirmed castings that we have as of now, and additional cast announcements will likely follow in the coming weeks and months.

Release Date

The film is scheduled to be released in theaters by United Artists Releasing on March 24, 2023. Production began in November 2021 at Columbia High School in Essex County, New Jersey, where Braff is an alum. MGM will be handling the production rights to A Good Person, which will reportedly cover territories in North America, Europe, Asia, and Latin America.
