Whoopi Goldberg Gives Positive Update on Sister Act 3

With many movies making belated comebacks, next up is Sister Act 3. Or, at least it seemed to be when it was announced to be moving forward with Whoopi Goldberg reprising her role as the former showroom bar singer turned nun. However, it has been over a year since anything has been mentioned about the potential third movie in the franchise, and many have started to wonder if it is still happening. Thankfully, Goldberg has now given an update on the film, and it seems to be positive news.

Sister Act was a box office hit when it was released back in 1992, pulling in over $230 million from its reasonable $30 million budget. A sequel was quickly put out a year later, but Sister Act 2: Back In The Habit didn’t quite hit the same high, but still proved to be commercially sound. Back in 2013, two decades after last playing the role, Goldberg was asked about the possibility of returning as Sister Mary Clarence in a new sequel, but the actress said that due to so many of her co-stars no longer being with us, it “didn’t seem like Sister Act without them.”

Flash forward to 2018 and it was confirmed that a sequel was in the works at Disney, and by December 2020 Goldberg was signed on to reprise her role in the movie that would be heading to Disney+ as an exclusive release. While there has been very little said since then, the latest episode of The View gave Goldberg the chance to provide a small, but positive update. She said:

“You know we’re still going to do that movie.”

Goldberg Was Taught to Sing by Sister Act Co-Star Jenifer Lewis

Whoopi Goldberg’s Sister Act co-star Jenifer Lewis appeared as a guest on the episode of The View, which allowed the pair to reminisce about their previous work on the first two Sister Act movies. While talking about the original movie, Lewis revealed that at one point they were planning to use her voice for Goldberg’s singing, but instead she taught her how to sing. She said:

“They were going to use my voice (for Goldberg). And I told Whoopi, ‘Look, you just get in this mirror with the two of us, and you just get a hairbrush and pretend that we’re 15 years old singing Gladys Knight and the Pips,’ and Whoopi did it, she sang her little booty off.”

Sister Act 3 put High School Musical: The Musical: The Series creator Tim Federle in the director’s seat, with a script being provided by Madhuri-Shekar. While Goldberg provided no further information about the sequel or how far away from production it is, the news is a welcome update for those looking forward to seeing Goldberg back in the habit again. There is currently no release window for Sister Act 3, but if production gets underway relatively soon, then the sequel could be seen hitting Disney+ as early as next year.
