Wednesday Showrunners Tease More of the Addams Family in Potential Second Season

The Addams Family has been rebooted in the form of Wednesday, an all-new series at Netflix starring Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams. As the title would suggest, the show is primarily focused on Wednesday as an older teen attending Nevermore Academy. The other Adamses do make appearances, including Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia, Luis Guzman as Gomez, Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley, and Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester.

Officially, Wednesday hasn’t been renewed for a second season, but its showrunners have tentative plans together on where to take the show moving forward. In a new interview with TVLine, co-creator and co-showrunner Al Gough teased that season 2 would continue to focus mostly on Wednesday as she continues to grow on her own outside of the old family mansion.

“The series is really about a girl who sees the world in black and white, and learning there are shades of gray. I think like any relationship or any friendship, it can get complicated by other factors. It’s never going to be smooth sailing. And it’s really her learning to navigate the ups and downs of friendship.”

Wednesday’s clearly the star, but there’d still be much more to come from the other Addamses as well if the series gets renewed. Fellow co-creator and co-showrunner Miles Millar also teased that the series has barely “touched the surface” of what can be done with the other family members. Miller reiterates that the series is called Wednesday, and Ortega’s titular teen will continue to be the focus, but that fans can still expect to see the rest of the kooky family in another season.

“We felt like we just touched the surface with those characters and the actors are so amazing in those roles. Catherine is, I think, an iconic Morticia. The relationship between Wednesday and Morticia is also essential to the show, and the idea that Wednesday is trying to forge her own path outside the family is important. [We] definitely want to feature the family as we did this season in a couple of episodes if we were to get a second season.”

Wednesday Reimagines The Addams Family

Tim Burton directed four of the show’s eight episodes and served as an executive producer, collaborating with Gough and Millar on the visuals and creative direction of the show. Along with the aforementioned cast members as the Addams Family, Wednesday also stars Gwendoline Christie, Riki Lindhome, Jamie McShane, Percy Hynes White, Emma Myers, Joy Sunday, Georgie Farmer, Naomi J. Ogawa, Moosa Mostafa, and Christina Ricci.

Ortega also recently explained how Tim Burton helped bring Thing to life for the series. Victor Dorobantu would wear a bluescreen suit that covered all of his body except for one hand. Ortega also explained that the crew had built a prosthetic on top of his hand that “looked like a wrist knob,” allowing him to move freely with his body later removed in editing.

Wednesday can now be found streaming on Netflix.
