Thor: Love and Thunder’s Tessa Thompson Addresses Confusion Over Valkyrie’s ‘King’ Title

Among others, Thor: Love and Thunder sees the return of Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie. One thing that has been confusing some fans is why Valkyrie has retained the title of King of New Asgard rather than becoming Queen. Now the actress has settled the debate for those who have been bothered by the gendered titling of Valkyrie, explaining she is mainly King simply because no one bothered to change the title.

While there are a lot of questions to be answered in Thor: Love and Thunder, there have been a number of Marvel fans on social media who have been unable to get beyond the royal title that has been bestowed upon the warrior. While speaking to Total Film about the upcoming movie, Thompson discussed Valkyrie’s new role as Asgard’s ruler, including how she feels about her new status and also how the title of King is something that just happened because she took over the role that Thor was meant to have. She said:

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“I think she’s very egalitarian. She’s a kind king. I know there’s been some confusion on the internet in terms of the gendering with her being king. The truth is, that’s the job that Thor was going to do, and then he just gave her the job, and we just didn’t bother to change the title, because the title is ‘king’, and she’s like, ‘Well, I can be king.’ The suits that she wears – we thought it was sort of a fun nod to Frida Kahlo. She likes it. She feels slightly less enchanted with the bureaucratic elements of New Asgard. It’s really been put on the map by the events that have happened in past movies, so it’s also become this sort of tourist destination. I think she feels entirely proud. The thing about Asgard that’s always been true is, it’s not a place, it’s its people.”

Thor: Love and Thunder is Full of Promises It Could Keep

Marvel Studios

Of late, fans’ expectations of Marvel Studios releases, both on Disney+ and in cinemas, have been slightly overambitious and have left many feeling a bit underwhelmed. This has mainly come from the colossal Avengers: Endgame, which many fans believed would be followed with something that continued to be grand and all-encompassing, but of course in reality that would never work. Instead, there has been a kind of reset, with the MCU almost turning the clock back to 2008 to start all over again. Unlike Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love and Thunder could actually give audiences exactly what they are expecting.

Thor: Love and Thunder has not been marketed as a multiverse movie in any way; this means that all the wild theories of who could possibly show up in a different form are gone. Also, there has been a clear story and cast of characters already revealed in the trailers. While we know things will not pan out exactly as they seem, it looks like there will be more than enough to satisfy fans and make Thor one of the biggest winners this summer.
