Thor: Love and Thunder TV Spot Offers More From Gorr

“The world will be better without gods,” says Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher in the latest TV spot for upcoming Marvel sequel Thor: Love and Thunder. Released courtesy of Thor: Love and Thunder News, the brief promo offers a few glimpses of new footage, including further looks at Natalie Portman’s return as Jane Foster. Who this time will assist the God of Thunder as The Mighty Thor.

Thor: Love and Thunder finds Thor on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced, searching for some semblance of inner peace. Sadly, his retirement is soon interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher, who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of his old friends King Valkyrie, Korg and, much to his own surprise, ex-girlfriend Jane Foster, who now inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they must embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.

Written and directed by Taika Waititi, Thor: Love and Thunder sees MCU staple Chris Hemsworth reprise the role of Thor alongside Tessa Thompson as King Valkyrie, Jaimie Alexander as Lady Sif, Taika Waititi as Korg, Russell Crowe as Zeus, and Natalie Portman as Jane Foster AKA The Mighty Thor.

Thor: Love and Thunder brings Academy Award winner and star of The Dark Knight, Christian Bale, into the Marvel fray. The beloved actor will be very much on villain duty in the sequel, starring as Gorr the God Butcher, an alien with the most tragic of backstories who has decided that the universe will much better off without the gods. Which, of course, is bad news for Thor.

Gorr the God Butcher Could Be the Best Villain the MCU Has Ever Had

Marvel Studios

Director Taika Waititi has teased the level of threat that Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher will pose in Thor: Love and Thunder. Even calling the evil-doer the “best” that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has ever had. “It’s a great, really fun, weird little group of heroes, a new team for Thor with Korg, Valkyrie and The Mighty Thor,” the filmmaker said. “And, in my humble opinion, we have probably the best villain that Marvel’s ever had in Christian Bale.”

Based on the recent trailer, Gorr will follow a similar path to his comic book counterpart, meaning that Gorr will begin life on a planet with no name, living every day on the brink of starvation. Taught to trust in the gods, despite them never answering his prayers, Gorr’s faith is shattered when he is met with tragedy after tragedy. Gorr abandons his belief in the Gods, leading to his exile, and while wandering the desert close to death, Gorr witnesses a pair of battling gods. Realizing that they do indeed exist, they just don’t care, Gorr becomes enraged and bonds with the dark god’s sword, swearing that he will cut a bloody path through time and space to eradicate the gods forever.

Thor: Love and Thunder will premiere in Los Angeles on June 23, 2022, and is scheduled to be released on July 8, 2022, as part of Phase Four of the MCU.
