Thor: Love and Thunder Trailer Reveals Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher

The newest trailer for the upcoming Marvel sequel Thor: Love and Thunder has finally revealed Christian Bale as the villainous Gorr the God Butcher in all his glory. The Oscar winner and star of The Dark Knight will join the MCU as Gorr, an alien who has vowed to kill all the gods as punishment for their arrogance and failure to use their power for the betterment of the universe. And, judging by the footage, he could be the greatest threat that any of the Marvel heroes has ever faced.

Gorr begins life on a planet with no name, living every day on the brink of starvation. He is taught to trust in the gods, even though they never answer his prayers. After living a tragic life filled with death and struggle, Gorr abandons his belief in the Gods, leading to his exile. While wandering the desert close to death, Gorr witnesses a pair of battling gods and, realizing that they do indeed exist, they just don’t care, Gorr becomes enraged and bonds with the dark god’s sword.

Imbued with power thanks to the All-Black necrosword, Gorr vows that “all gods will die,” and travels throughout time and space, murdering any and every god along the way in the name of revenge.

While the trailer does not confirm how much of his comic book origin will make the jump to live action, the sheer threat posed by Gorr the God Butcher has certainly been carried over. Christian Bale cuts a terrifying figure as Gorr, his pale skin making his yellow and black eyes pierce. Covered in scars, Gorr will seemingly become more and more corrupted by the dark sword as he coughs up black sludge and even drains the very color from the screen. While the character does not retain the extra-terrestrial visage of his comic book counterpart (something which is sure to leave some disappointed), Bale nonetheless cuts a horrifying figure amid the vibrant hues of Taika Waititi’s Marvel outing.

Thor: Love and Thunder finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.

Director Taika Waititi has teased the impact of Christian Bale’s Gorr saying, “It’s a great, really fun, weird little group of heroes, a new team for Thor with Korg, Valkyrie and The Mighty Thor. And, in my humble opinion, we have probably the best villain that Marvel’s ever had in Christian Bale.”

Starring Chris Hemsworth alongside Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Jaimie Alexander, Waititi, Russell Crowe, and Natalie Portman, Thor: Love and Thunder is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 8, 2022, as part of Phase Four of the MCU.
