Thor: Love and Thunder Director Teases Major Cameos in Marvel Sequel

Director Taika Waititi has teased some major cameo appearances in the upcoming Marvel sequel Thor: Love and Thunder. Cameos that he hopes will remain a secret until release. In a new interview with, Waititi was asked whether Thor: Love and Thunder will feature cameos to rival those seen in Thor: Ragnarok, which of course, saw the likes of Matt Damon and Sam Neill enter the MCU. The filmmaker answered simply “Yes,” before adding that it would make no sense to hint at who these cameos might be.

“Otherwise it won’t be a cameo. You can’t talk about it. Then they may as well be on the poster.”

While Waititi expertly gives absolutely nothing away, there will no doubt be many lining up to speculate who might make an appearance in Thor: Love and Thunder. It is worth noting, though, that the likes of Matt Damon, Sam Neill, and Luke Hemsworth are expected to feature again as the Asgardian acting troupe. They will return to play Loki, Odin, and Thor respectively, with Melissa McCarthy reportedly joining them as an actress playing Hela, the villain of Thor: Ragnarok.

Thor: Love and Thunder picks up following the events of 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, and finds the Asgardian and former Avenger embarking on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced — a quest for inner peace. However, his retirement is interrupted by Gorr the God Butcher, a galactic killer who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie, Korg and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster, who — to his surprise — inexplicably wields his magical hammer. Together, they set out on a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance.

Thor: Love and Thunder Will Add Plenty of New Characters

One such cameo that we are already aware of is Zeus, who will be portrayed by Oscar winner Russell Crowe. Starring as the ruler of Olympia and fellow deity opposite Thor, this take on Zeus will make references to one of Crowe’s most celebrated roles: Gladiator’s Maximus Decimus Meridius.

“I never thought I’d see the day where Russell would appear on screen with hints at Gladiator imagery, yet with a wink-totally self-deprecating. He didn’t hold back. I’m such a fan,” Thor actor Chris Hemsworth recently revealed. I have been since I first started acting. There’s such a weight and a seriousness to his performances and to him, as an individual, from afar. But meeting him, he has a great sense of humor and did whatever Taika asked on set, which was mind-blowing. And it was really fun to play with the mythology, going from Norse to Greek mythology – Taika pulls all these worlds together.”

Directed by Taika Waititi and starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Jaimie Alexander, Chris Pratt, Pom Klementieff, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper, Thor: Love and Thunder is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 8, 2022, as part of Phase Four of the MCU.
