Thor 5 Will Need to be a Reinvention & Different From Love & Thunder, Chris Hemsworth Declares

Marvel star Chris Hemsworth thinks Thor 5 should be reinvented following the release of Thor: Love and Thunder. Speaking with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast, the actor explained that, with both Thor and Thor: The Dark World being similar in tone, followed by Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder and their similarities, a fifth outing should change things up again and perhaps leave the comedic stylings behind.

“You look at Thor 1 and 2, they were quite similar. Ragnarok and Love and Thunder are similar. I think it’s about reinventing it. I’ve had such a unique opportunity with Infinity War and Endgame to do very drastic things with the character. I enjoy that, I like keeping people on their toes. It keeps me on my toes. It keeps me invested. I’ve said this before but when it becomes too familiar, I think there’s a risk in getting lazy then because I know what I’m doing. I don’t know if I’m even invited back, but if I was, I think it would have to be a drastically different version in tone, everything, just for my own sanity… [laughs] Thor lost his mind that last one. He’s got to figure it out now.”

While Hemsworth states that he would love to change things up again to keep him on his toes, audiences will no doubt have different reasons for wanting things to be different if and when Thor 5 comes around. Director Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok was beloved by audiences and critics for heavily leaning into comedy, but this has not been the case with the recent Thor: Love and Thunder, which is now the second-lowest ranking MCU installment on Rotten Tomatoes.

So, what do you think the franchise should do with Thor 5?

Chris Hemsworth Thinks Thor 5 Should be His Last MCU Adventure

Whatever happens with Thor 5, Hemsworth has recently stated that it should probably be his final adventure as the Marvel superhero. “I feel like we’d probably have to close the book if I ever did it again, you know what I mean?” he said. “I feel like it probably warrants that. I feel like it’d probably be the finale, but that’s not based on anything anyone’s told me or any sort of plans. You have this birth of a hero, the journey of a hero, then the death of a hero, and I don’t know—am I at that stage? Who knows?”

While we await further news regarding a potential fifth Thor outing, Chris Hemsworth now plans to take a break from acting following the filming of the Disney+ National Geographic series, Limitless, which has found the actor facing his own mortality. Undergoing genetic tests for the series, Hemsworth has been informed that he carries two copies of the gene APOE4, which significantly increases the chances of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

“It’s not like I’ve been handed my resignation,” Hemsworth said of his decision to take a break, adding that it, “really triggered something in me to want to take some time off.” Hemsworth will endeavor to take preventative steps saying, “If you look at Alzheimer’s prevention, the benefit of preventative steps is that it affects the rest of your life,” he explained. “It’s not a pre-deterministic gene, but it is a strong indication. Ten years ago, I think it was more thought of as determinant.”

Chris Hemsworth still has several projects in the pipeline, including the Netflix action movie sequel, Extraction 2, and the upcoming Mad Max prequel, Furiosa.
