After waiting so many years for Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to make his superhero debut as Black Adam, it will delight fans to hear that the actor is in it for the long haul and that he even has plans to expand both the Black Adam and the wider DC cinematic universe. Speaking with Comicbook.com at a recent Q&A, Johnson declared his desire to give DC fans what they want, revealing that Black Adam is just “the beginning.”
“I am 100% committed to not only Black Adam but then expanding the Black Adam universe, the DC universe. I am an optimist from the word, ‘Go.’ So, to me and to all of us up here, all universes exist in our heads. I will, we all will, work very hard to make sure we are honoring the mythology but also giving the fans what they want. I hear the fans, we all do, and I pick up everything they’re putting down. It doesn’t get by me, it doesn’t get by these guys [producer Hiram Garcia, producer Beau Flynn, director Jaume Collet-Serra]. This is the beginning, hopefully, fingers crossed, of a very long storytelling road that Black Adam is the anchoring jet fuel now that will then push and press this universe out.”
The DC cinematic universe is a lot more…confusing than the Marvel one, with the franchise attempting to connect everything before somewhat abandoning that plan and allowing characters and projects to branch off into their own, standalone worlds. Hence projects such as Joker and The Batman. While we have seen DC characters share the screen thanks to the likes of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, it sounds like this will not be the plan for the first Black Adam outing. Instead, Johnson hopes to bring in crossovers and tie-ins as the franchise continues.

Echoing these sentiments, Black Adam producer Hiram Garcia said, “It’s all part of the mission. In our mind, it’s all part of a shared universe. All these guys exist together. We’re just focused on telling this story, on telling Black Adam and [Justice Society of America]. But the way we view it and our ambitions for the Universe is this is all shared. And I think you start to feel the ripples of these guys in the Universe.”
Black Adam marks the debut of The Rock as the title character. The actor has been tapped to play the role for several years now, and fans have waited patiently to see him suit up. Well, the wait is finally over, as the first trailer for Black Adam has now dropped and teases the super-powered destruction on display at the hands of Johnson’s antihero.
Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra from a screenplay by Adam Sztykiel, Rory Haines, and Sohrab Noshirvani, Black Adam follows Johnson as Teth-Adam, who is imprisoned for 5,000 years. Chosen by the wizard Shazam, Teth-Adam is imbued with superpowers, emerging in the modern day as the lethal protector, Black Adam.
Black Adam is scheduled to be released in the United States on October 21, 2022.
