Spoiler Alert: Spoiler For The Rings of Power Finale Below
Charlie Vickers gave an excellent performance as Halbrand through the first seven episodes of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. In the eighth and final episode of the season, Halbrand’s true identity is revealed as he plays the Dark Lord Sauron. Fans slowly began to realize the turn his character was taking throughout his time on the series, as he stood out among the ensemble cast as a mysterious figure with several secrets.
Vickers recently sat down with Polygon, discussing his character’s reveal and what that would mean in future seasons. During his interview, Vickers disclosed the inspiration behind his take on the iconic villain, saying Antony Starr’s portrayal of Homelander on The Boys was something he strived for.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
“I did find a lot of inspiration in other performances as well, watching different actors play villains. […] While we were doing this show I was watching The Boys, and Antony Starr did such an amazing job with Homelander. There was an element of things that are going forward with the character. And then in that last scene with Galadriel he has something scary that just sits beneath the surface of what he’s doing. So I was inspired by that.”
Sauron is an ever-present force in The Lord of the Rings, and his character should be expanded upon even further in The Rings of Power season 2. The finale concludes with the Dark Lord returning to Mordor, which will likely be a significant plot point going forward as he gathers his armies. Whether he shifts forms from Charlie Vickers is still unknown, as the version we see in other projects resembles his character in full armor.
Homelander Is One of the Best Villains in Media
Antony Starr has mastered his role as Homelander, portraying the character for three seasons on The Boys. The unhinged villain with otherworldly powers terrorizes everyone around him, proving to be a true psychopath throughout his time on the show. However, with a backstory provided by The Boys Presents: Diabolical, his character became slightly more sympathetic.
The Boys has alluded to the tragic childhood of Homelander, though it’s rarely discussed in detail. However, despite his actions, it’s understandable to see where he comes from based on his upbringing. Unfortunately, Homelander continuously proves himself to be beyond redemption, something that Charlie Vickers may mirror in his performance on The Rings of Power.
In The Lord of the Rings, Sauron is mostly a black-and-white character known as entirely evil, but Prime Video may take a different route in their story. For now, fans are eagerly anticipating the return of The Boys season 4, which is currently filming. In addition, The Rings of Power crew is hard at work on season 2, expected to arrive sometime in 2024.
