The Old Guard 2 Begins Filming for Netflix

Filming has now begun on The Old Guard 2, the upcoming sequel to one of Netflix’s biggest action movie hits. Director Victoria Mahoney took to social media to share the exciting news, revealing an image from the set of the follow-up alongside the simple caption, “Day1: #TheOldGuard2 / #TheOldGuard XV.”

Based on the graphic novel by writer Greg Rucka, The Old Guard was released on Netflix in 2020 and follows a group of mercenaries led by Charlize Theron. But there is something unusual about this group of mercenaries, they are all centuries-old immortals with the ability to heal themselves. The first outing for what is sure to be a franchise, centers on the group as they discover that someone is onto their secret, forcing them to fight to protect their freedom.

The first The Old Guard is directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and written by Greg Rucka, and stars Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Harry Melling, Veronica Ngo, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

The Old Guard 2 sees Gina Prince-Bythewood step down from directing duties and into a producer role, with Victoria Mahoney taking over to helm the highly anticipated sequel. The Old Guard 2 was officially given the greenlight by the streaming giant last year, and will see the main players, including Theron, Layne, Schoenaerts, Kenzari, Marinelli, Ngo, and Ejiofor all return to reprise their roles.

The Old Guard 2 Adds Uma Thurman & Henry Golding to the Comic Book Movie Sequel

While The Old Guard’s first outing already boasts an impressive cast, the sequel plans to impress audiences even further, adding high-profile names Uma Thurman (Kill Bill) and Henry Golding (Snake Eyes) to the roster. Though their roles in The Old Guard 2 remain a mystery at present, both actors have a lot of experience punching, kicking, and shooting their way out of cinematic trouble, so expect them to play a major part.

Plot details for The Old Guard 2 are also currently being kept under lock and key, though Charlize Theron has revealed that the sequel will find her character, Andy AKA Andromache of Scythia, struggling with her newfound mortality and “once again warring over the things that she cannot change in her life.”

Of course, The Old Guard franchise is based on a comic book series, and thus we can no doubt garner clues for the follow-up via the source material. The Old Guard Book Two: Force Multiplied was released back in 2020 by Image Comics, and the official synopsis reads as follows; “When you’ve waged war as long as Andy and her squad, you’ve gotten your hands more than bloody. Now, the day has come to confront the sins of the past. But as Nile struggles to make peace with the team, the last person Andy expected to ever see again returns to challenge not only what Andy believes in, but what the team is willing to fight for.”

The Old Guard 2 does not yet have a release date but expect to see a lot more updates emerge now that production is underway.
