Bloys revelation that The Last of Us could light up screens with its darkly grim vision of the world is sure to please fans, who no doubt feel like they have been waiting for the series to land on HBO for quite some time. “By that time, we’ll have gone through Sex Lives of College Girls season two, White Lotus 2, The Idol, Last of Us, Succession, Julia, Hacks, Barry and Righteous Gemstones,” he said. “It’s a pretty packed lineup again. We could be talking about any number of those shows!”

Released in 2013 and developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, The Last of Us finds players as Joel, a smuggler tasked with escorting a teenage girl, Ellie, across a post-apocalyptic United States. Players must use firearms, improvised weapons, stealth, and other tactics to defend themselves against hostile humans and cannibalistic creatures infected by a mutated strain of the Cordyceps fungus that has spread across the nation.

The Last of Us has become a PlayStation favorite and is one of the most critically acclaimed video games of all time. Critics have heaped praise on its cinematic narrative and in-depth characterization, with elements from the game sure to lend themselves effortlessly to a small screen adaptation as the pixels leap into live action. A video game sequel, The Last of Us Part II, landed in 2020 and was similarly met with universal acclaim from critics. So, there is a lot of material for HBO to bring to screens.

Pascal has teased the “harrowing” nature of the series, while revealing that he does not know what his character’s fate will be. “It is covered in clickers and spores, and the elements of Alberta, and we’re having an amazing time,” the actor said. “It’s totally harrowing. And I don’t know if we’ll make it, but it’ll be completely worth it. It is amazing. And I’m having an amazing time. I don’t know if I’ll make it.”

Starring Gabriel Luna, Merle Dandridge, Jeffrey Pierce, Anna Torv, Nick Offerman, and Storm Reid alongside Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, The Last of Us will land on HBO in early 2023.
