The Jetsons Fans Celebrate George Jetson’s Date of Birth

After an online fan took to Twitter to announce that George Jetson from the classic 1960s animated series The Jetsons will be born on Sunday, July 31, 2022, people lost it. All in jest, of course. On Thursday, Brendan Kergin shared on Twitter a chart from the character’s online fan page. Listed on the chart is George’s basic family information such as his father’s and wife’s names, along with his familiar catchphrase: “Jane! Stop this crazy thing!” However, the eye-catcher is George’s highlighted birthday – July 31, 2022.

Kergin wrote with the image:

“I don’t mean to alarm anyone, but someone is about to give birth to George Jetson.”

One person responded to Kergin’s tweet with:

“”FINALLY. The Jetsons are catching up to reality!!! WHERE’S MY FLYING CAR?!?!?!?!”

Adding an image of the three wise men riding a camel while following a star, another wrote,

“Me and the boys on our way to witness the birth of George Jetson.”

The iconic Hanna-Barbera Production series debuted on September 23, 1962, on ABC and the characters often mentioned its 21st-century setting. The patriarch George Jetson is the husband of Jane, the father of teenage daughter Judy and elementary school-aged son Elroy and owner of a dog named Astro. The family lived in the Skypad Apartments in Orbit City in 2062 with robot servants, flying saucer-like cars and moving sidewalks.

All the apartment buildings are set on giant poles as the Earth has become too polluted to live on, thus everyone lives in the sky. The Jetsons premiered two years after another classic cartoon first aired, that prehistoric family The Flintstones, and ran for only one season, from 1962 to 1963 with a showing of 24 episodes. The cancelation could have been due, in part, to the lack of color TV sets back then. The future just doesn’t seem so bright in black & white. However, it likely had more to do with the competition. The Jetsons were up against Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color.

Though no specific birthdate for George Jetson was ever seemingly revealed, MeTV has said that promotional materials and articles at the time of its premiere set the Jetsons 100 years into the future, placing the show’s setting in 2062. In the season’s fifteenth episode, titled Test Pilot, George has an existential crisis after he thinks he is dying and decides to become a test pilot for a supposedly indestructible suit. During the episode, George goes to the doctor, who claims that he should “live to be 150.” Some time later, after risking his life in a series of daredevil stunts, George tells his boss, Mr. Spacely, “I’ve got 110 good years ahead of me,” placing him at 40 years old. So, it sounds like 2022 would be the correct birth year for George Jetson.
