The Guardians of the Galaxy Almost Had a Much Bigger Role in Thor: Love and Thunder

SPOILERS for Thor: Love and Thunder to follow…

Director Taika Waititi has revealed that the Guardians of the Galaxy almost played a much bigger role in the recently released Marvel sequel, Thor: Love and Thunder. Speaking to Insider, Waititi explained his initial plan for the Guardians of the Galaxy, revealing that were discussions about having them appear at both the beginning and the end of the movie.

“The plan was always to have them in the beginning and then move on. Because they have their own movie. There was talk about having them come back at the end.”

Thor: Love and Thunder picks up right after the final moments of Avengers: Endgame, with the Asgardian heading off into the unknown with the Guardians of the Galaxy. While it was unknown how much of a role the Guardians of the Galaxy would play in proceedings, it was expected by many that they would only feature at the start and part with Thor during the first act.

While there were discussions about bringing the Guardians back at the end of Thor: Love and Thunder, Waititi ultimately decided that this would be too predictable.

“The thing is that happens in every movie. No more. No more of the cavalry coming at the end. So we shelved that idea. We just wanted Jane to come in at the end.”

Though the Guardians of the Galaxy do not play a major role in Thor: Love and Thunder, it’s exciting for fans to finally see the Thor team-up with the gang and become the Asgardians of the Galaxy. Even if it’s just for a moment.

Taika Waititi Has Said He Would Return for Thor 5 Under One Condition

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

The Marvel Cinematic Universe continues with Thor: Love and Thunder, which finds Thor on a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher, who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie, Korg, and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster, who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.

Interestingly, while Thor: Love and Thunder ends with the message “Thor will return,” this came as a huge surprise to both Waititi and Chris Hemsworth. Since then, the filmmaker has stated that he would return for Thor 5, but only under one condition. “That was a surprise to me, too. I’m not joking. I saw it in the theater and I was like, ‘Oh, [expletive]. Really?’ Even Chris was like, ‘What?’” Waititi said. “But, of course he’ll be back. He’s the best character. I mean, I may be a little biased, but he’s the most fun to watch. Now, I don’t know what would be next. I would definitely do one, but only if Chris did it. But it would need to be something surprising and unexpected for me to want to do it.”

Directed by Taika Waititi and starring Chris Hemsworth alongside Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Jaimie Alexander, Russell Crowe, and Natalie Portman, with Chris Pratt, Pom Klementieff, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper reprising their roles as the Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor: Love and Thunder is in theaters now.
