The Gray Man First Reactions Praise Ryan Gosling & Chris Evans’ Netflix Action Outing

The first reactions to the Netflix action thriller The Gray Man starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans are in. Avengers: Endgame directors The Russo Brothers will launch the first installment in what they hope to be a franchise starter later this month. Based on the positive response so far, The Gray Man is shaping up to be a hugely successful release for both the Russos and the streaming giant.

Based on the 2009 novel of the same name by Mark Greaney, and centers on Court Gentry aka Sierra Six, the CIA’s most skilled mercenary whose true identity is known to none. After accidentally uncovering dark agency secrets, Gentry soon finds himself being hunted around the world by Lloyd Hansen, a psychopathic former colleague, who puts a bounty on his head, setting off a global manhunt by international assassins.

Many of the reactions heap praise on the action sequences and the one-two punch of A-listers Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans, who star in The Gray Man as rival spies Court Gentry and Lloyd Hansen.

Although, despite the presumed good work of Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans, many have stated that it is Indian actor Dhanush who steals the show out from under the Oscar nominee and the Marvel star.

Finally, while perhaps not quite reaching the same standard as action icons John Wick or Mission: Impossible, it certainly sounds like The Gray Man with more than enough spectacle, explosions, and testosterone-fueled rivalry to thoroughly entertain when it hits Netflix this month.

Based on These Reactions, Things Are Looking Good for The Gray Man Franchise

Netflix is going all-in on The Gray Man, with this first outing reportedly receiving a production budget of $200 million, making it the most expensive outing of all time for the streaming platform. All this effort, expense, and investment come with the hope that The Gray Man will launch a new franchise for Netflix, with plans already in place to continue the story in the form of a prequel with Chris Evans’ Lloyd Hansen at its center. The prequel is currently being written by Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

Alongside the Lloyd Hansen prequel, work has also now begun on The Gray Man 2, with both projects said to already be “at the very early stage.”

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo from a screenplay the latter co-wrote with Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, The Gray Man stars Ryan Gosling as Court Gentry AKA Sierra Six, the CIA black ops mercenary who is forced to go on the run and Chris Evans as Gentry’s psychopathic former colleague Lloyd Hansen. Starring alongside Gosling and Evans is a stellar supporting cast that includes Ana de Armas as Dani Miranda, Dhanush as Avik San, Jessica Henwick as Suzanne Brewer, Regé-Jean Page as Denny Carmichael, Alfre Woodard as Margaret Cahill, and Billy Bob Thornton as Donald Fitzroy, as well as Julia Butters, Wagner Moura, Callan Mulvey, Eme Ikwuakor, Scott Haze, Michael Gandolfini, Sam Lerner, Robert Kazinsky, and DeObia Oparei.

The Gray Man is set for a limited release on July 15, 2022, followed by its release on Netflix on July 22, 2022.
