The Boys Showrunner Shares the Story Behind Season 3’s Major Cameo

This article contains minor SPOILERS for season 3 of The Boys by revealing a surprise cameo appearance.

The Boys has kicked off its anticipated third season on Prime Video, and with the first three episodes came some rather shocking moments. Overlooking the bloody mayhem for just a moment, one a particular scene that had left many fans stunned was a surprise cameo by Hollywood legend Charlize Theron. This would mark the second appearance in a major comic book adaptation for Theron who was just recently seen in a post-credit sequence for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, seemingly setting up her Marvel Cinematic Universe future.

But how did The Boys manage to bring in Theron for a surprise cameo as well, just weeks after fans saw her make her MCU debut? It was simply a matter of good timing, as it was not planned that way. Speaking with Collider, series showrunner Eric Kripke explained that the cameo happened thanks to executive producer Seth Rogen reaching out to Theron after the two co-starred together in The Long Shot. Theron was fortunately interested, and Kripke was ecstatic as it helped start season 3’s production on a high note.

“I was there working with her that day and obviously, she’s an unbelievably great actress, but I was reminded of how funny she is. She’s deeply funny and has amazing comic timing and the earnestness with which she said the most ridiculous sh*t we could possibly put in her mouth was chef’s kiss. I’m just really, really grateful because it really kicks off the season.”

Rogen has also played himself in previous seasons of The Boys. Other celebrities to poke fun at themselves for special cameos include Chris Hansen, Billy Zane, Katie Couric, Jimmy Fallon, Mike Massaro, and Tara Reid.

One of the new stars of the series that came into The Boys starting with season 3 is Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy, the show’s equivalent to Captain America. The difference between these characters is that Soldier Boy only pretends to be a good-hearted patriot when the cameras are rolling and is a very different Supe behind the scenes. That makes him much more similar to Antony Starr’s Homelander, who seems to have met his match with Soldier Boy.

Other new cast members include Sean Patrick Flanery, Laurie Holden, and Miles Gaston Villanueva. They join returning stars Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Erin Moriarty, Antony Starr, Dominique McElligott, Jessie T. Suher, Laz Alonso, Tomer Capon, Chace Crawford, and Karen Fukuhara.

The first three episodes of The Boys’ third season are now streaming on Prime Video.
