The Boys Creator Teases Soldier Boy’s Role in Season 3: ‘He Was Homelander Before Homelander’

Homelander will soon meet his match in The Boys Season 3, with Supernatural star Jensen Ackles due to join the pantheon of horrible super “heroes” as the mysterious Soldier Boy. Speaking with Total Film, The Boys creator Eric Kripke has described Soldier Boy as “Homelander before Homelander.” A terrifyingly ominous summary if there ever were one.

“He’s the only one as powerful as Homelander. He’s the very first superhero – he was Homelander before Homelander.”

Jensen Ackles will join The Boys as Soldier Boy, with the Amazon adaptation due to making some major changes to the character when compared to the source material. Rather than being under the iron fist of Homelander as he is in the comics, the live-action take on Soldier Boy will instead have more parallels with Marvel icon Captain America. But with the kinds of twists befitting of The Boys, of course.

“He’s come out of World War Two. So he’s been around a really long time and he’s exactly as racist and misogynist as you would expect someone from the mid-1940s to be.”

The Boys Season 3 will introduce Soldier Boy as a superhero from World War II who is brought out of retirement. While we only know bits and pieces about the character so far, it certainly sounds like he will be hugely powerful, rivaling even the psychopathic Homelander, with the story of Soldier Boy expected to have a huge influence on the upcoming series.

“The Boys get on the mystery of what happened to Soldier Boy because he hasn’t been around with the hope that maybe through that is an answer of a way to take down Homelander,” Kripke adds. “So it’s interesting to have Homelander potentially be up against somebody as strong as him. He’s not a guy who has to deal with his own mortality very much – so when you put him into that situation, it’s pretty interesting.”

The Boys Season 3 is Due to Land on Amazon Next Month

Amazon Prime Video

Based on the comic book of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, The Boys takes place in a universe where super-powered individuals are recognized as heroes by the public and owned by the powerful corporation Vought International. Outside their heroic personas, most of these so-called “heroes” are arrogant and corrupt, with the series focussing on the titular Boys, a group of vigilantes looking to keep the corrupted superheroes under control.

The Boys Season 3 finds Billy Butcher in a surprising position – calm and on the straight and narrow. In fact, it’s been a year of calm. Homelander has been subdued. And Butcher is now working for the government, supervised by Hughie of all people. But both men itch to turn this peace and quiet into blood and bone. So, when The Boys learn of a mysterious anti-Supe weapon, it sends them crashing into The Seven, starting a war, and chasing the legend of the first Superhero: Soldier Boy.

Starring Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Laz Alonso, Tomer Capon, Karen Fukuhara, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Dominique McElligott, Chace Crawford, Jessie T. Usher, and Nathan Mitchell, The Boys Season 3 is due to land on Prime Video on June 3, 2022.
