The Batman 2 Script Being Written by Matt Reeves & Mattson Tomlin, Robert Pattinson Will Return

Amid the wide variety of controversial decisions currently being made by Warner Bros. regarding the DC cinematic universe, there had been some growing concern surrounding the status of The Batman 2. Well, it sounds like all that worry was for nothing, as it has now been confirmed that Matt Reeves and Mattson Tomlin will reunite and plan to start writing the sequel soon, with The Batman star Robert Pattinson set to return as The Dark Knight.

According to a report by Deadline, while development has yet to begin on The Batman follow-up, Reeves has already begun work on the project with he and The Batman co-writer Mattson Tomlin (who was uncredited as a writer on the first movie) due to put pen to paper very soon. Not only that, but a new statement from Warner Bros Pictures Group Co-Chairs/CEOs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy states that Matt Reeves will be given the freedom to build a Batman universe beyond the upcoming sequel and the HBO Max Penguin series.

“Someone like Matt, we’ll buy for him whatever he wants to do,” De Luca said. “We’re making an investment for whatever Matt feels a pull toward, in the Batman universe and otherwise. He has an open invitation to go wherever his interests take him. We’ll lean into whatever Matt wants to do. In terms of the writer/directors out there working in this very elevated genre space, with everything Matt’s done, from Let Me In to the Apes trilogy to The Batman, he’s in a class by himself.”

Chairman of the Warner Bros. Television Group Channing Dungey adds, “Matt is one of the most imaginative and creative minds in the business. We look forward to continuing our partnership with the wonderful 6th & Idaho team and expanding the world Matt so artfully created with The Batman film through our upcoming series The Penguin.”

Work on The Batman 2 comes as part of a new deal that has been struck between Warner Bros. Discovery and Matt Reeves’ 6th & Idaho production company. Reeves has now signed an overall first-look film deal with the iconic studio, meaning he can develop pretty much whatever he likes the sound of.

“Making this legendary studio my home is a dream,” Reeves said of the deal. “I am so excited to be working with Mike, Pam, and Channing and our teams to bring captivating stories I am truly passionate about to the big and small screen.”

Released in March, The Batman introduces audiences to a version of the DC vigilante two years into his career as a crime fighter. Striking fear into the hearts of criminals, Batman comes up against his greatest threat yet when a serial killer known as The Riddler begins targeting Gotham’s elite. Starring Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Peter Sarsgaard, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell, The Batman was met with rave reviews upon release.

The Batman 2 does not yet have a release date.
