The next Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie to play on the big screen has gotten its official title. From Paramount Pictures, the animated feature film is scheduled to release in theaters on Aug. 4, 2023, and to mark the one-year countdown, the studio has officially unveiled the movie’s title. As seen in the official logo above, the movie is called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.
The film is a collaboration between Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies. Seth Rogen is producing with Evan Goldberg and James Weaver. Jeff Rowe is directing while Kyler Spears serves as co-director. Not much else has been revealed about the film beyond that it has a 2023 release date, but the filmmaker have done some teasing about what fans of the heroes in a half-shell can expect from their return to the big screen next year. The goal is for this film to start a new TMNT franchise by having this movie appeal to people of all ages, children and adults alike.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
“It’s animated, and it goes back to the roots of the Turtles,” Paramount chief Brian Robbins previously told Variety. “Seth and his producing partner Evan Goldberg were brilliant choices because no one can tell stories about being teenagers better than those guys. They’re passionate and super nerdy about the Turtles. It’s going to work for kids, parents, Gen Z-ers and Millennials. We have plans to do multiple animated movies this way, but one day we might go back to a hybrid live-action version of the Turtles.”
Heroes in a Half-Shell, Turtle Power!
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise has been popular since the 1980s and first made its way to the big screen with a live-action feature film in 1990. That movie was followed by two sequels, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze in 1991 and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III in 1993. In 2007, an unrelated CG-animated movie TMNT would be released in theaters as well.
In 2014, the franchise was rebooted with a new live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film directed by Jonathan Liebesman. That movie was also given a sequel in 2016, dubbed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. There were tentative plans to turn this series into a trilogy as well, but the second movie underperforming at the box office led to those plans getting scrapped.
Meanwhile, there’s a new animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie that’s just arriving on Netflix. Serving as a continuation of the animated series, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie will start streaming on Netflix starting on Aug. 5, 2022. It is not connected to the theatrical reboot that’s coming out next year. Given the multiple projects on the big and small screens, coupled with the recent release of the video game Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge, it’s clear that Turtle Power is just as popular as ever in 2022.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is scheduled to premiere in movie theaters on Aug. 4, 2023.
