A stunning fan-made animation brings to life the world of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin. Shared to the YouTube channel Speedokaggen by creator Magnus Edlund, the animation introduces us to the post-apocalyptic world depicted in Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird’s 2020 comic, introducing a lone Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle as he attempts to come to grips with the loss of his beloved father and brothers.
“This is a non-profit project. I’m making this for the amazing teenage mutant ninja turtles community and because I love the Turtles!” director and producer Magnus Edlund said in a statement alongside the fan-film, which brings to life a sequence from the source material with grimly beautiful clarity as the lone Turtle struggles with life in this new world.

Created by Kevin Eastman, Peter Laird, Tom Waltz and Andy Kuhn with art from Kuhn and Ben Bates, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin began back in 2020 and ran for 5 issues. “Who is the Last Ronin?” the official synopsis begins. “In a future, battle-ravaged New York City, a lone surviving Turtle embarks on a seemingly hopeless mission seeking justice for the family he lost. From legendary TMNT co-creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, get ready for the final story of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles three decades in the making!”
While there are currently no plans to bring Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin to either live-action or animation, this fan-made film certainly demonstrates how well the material could translate to screen should the studio ever decide to take the franchise down this much darker route ala The Dark Knight Returns.
“When Tom Waltz and I worked through the first 100 issues at IDW, the incredible turtle universe we built over there, we were looking like, ‘Well, where do we go from here? I pulled out this story that Pete and I wrote, and I said, ‘How about we do this? This is kind of like a Dark Knight Returns sort of final Turtles story, but the door’s open to go other places depending on if people don’t hate us after they see the ending,” Eastman said of the inspiration behind The Last Ronin.
Several Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Movies Are Currently in Development
Though we may never see Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin brought to life in its entirety, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have plenty to offer, with several movies currently in development. A sequel to the 2016 outing, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, is now being worked on at Paramount Pictures. Michael Bay, Andrew Form, Brad Fuller, Scott Mednick, and Galen Walker are on board to produce the project, with Colin and Casey Jost currently working on the script.
Aside from the live-action effort, an animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie has also been given the greenlight courtesy of The Boys’ Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. The project is being made in conjunction with Nickelodeon and Point Grey Pictures and will reportedly be a CGI animated reboot of the popular franchise, with a release date now set for August 4, 2023.
If that were not already enough, the animated Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie starring Ben Schwartz, Omar Benson Miller, Brandon Mychal Smith, Josh Brener, Kat Graham, Eric Bauza, and Haley Joel Osment is set for release on August 5, 2022.
