Taron Egerton Joins Netflix Thriller Carry On From Black Adam Director

Taron Egerton is currently winning praise for his lead role in Apple’s critically acclaimed prison thriller Black Bird, which also marks one of the final appearances of the late Ray Liotta. Egerton has now set his sights on another high-profile thriller, Carry On, to be directed by Spanish filmmaker Jaume Collet-Serra (Black Adam, The Shallows, Orphan).

Netflix and Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment will be producing Carry On as part of their 2021 multi-movie deal. The Batman producer, Dylan Clark, will also oversee the production along with Brian Williams, Holly Bario, Amblin’s President of Production, Scott Greenberg, and Seth William Meier.

Carry On is still in the early stages of development, so the larger plot details are being kept under wraps, but the official logline for the film (via Deadline) reads:

“The thriller centers on Ethan Kopek, a young TSA agent who gets blackmailed by a mysterious traveler to let a dangerous package slip through security and onto a Christmas Day flight.”

It’s currently unknown if the plot will revolve around a terrorist threat or hijacking, but Carry On seems to be in good hands. Carry On is written by TJ Fixman (Ratchet & Clank) and Michael Green (Blade Runner 2049). Jaume Collet-Serra is no stranger to thrillers either, having directed films like The Shallows, Orphan, and Liam Neeson’s The Commuter and Run All Night. Collet-Serra also helmed the 2014 film Non-Stop, starring Liam Neeson and Julianne Moore, which centered on a plane hijacking.

Collet-Serra will next bring Dwayne Johnson’s superhero Teth-Adam to the big screen this October with the highly anticipated Black Adam.

As for Carry On, no release date has been announced yet, and Egerton is the only actor cast so far, but more news is expected soon. However, Collet-Serra is also attached to the Jungle Cruise sequel, which could end up delaying Carry On.

Taron Egerton Has Cemented His Leading Man Status in Hollywood

Carry On marks Taron Egerton’s first film collaboration with Netflix. He previously lent his voice to Netflix’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. Egerton is also partnered with Apple TV+ and recently starred in the prison thriller Black Bird, for which he’s receiving rave reviews. The 32-year-old British star will next portray Henk Rogers in the biographical film Tetris, about the creation and release of the popular video game.

Ever since his breakout role in Kingsman: The Secret Service, Taron Egerton has been delivering one incredible performance after the other. Egerton has since starred in the films Eddie the Eagle, Sing, Sing 2, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, and Rocketman, for which he received every major acting award nomination barring the Oscars. As for the future, Egerton is slated to return in Kingsman 3 and has also had talks with Marvel regarding a role, reportedly of Wolverine. Egerton is the leading fan choice to succeed Hugh Jackman as the clawed superhero, and he’s down to play the role as well.

“I don’t think it would be wrong to say that. I’d be excited but I’d be apprehensive as well, because Hugh is so associated with the role that I’d wonder if it’d be very difficult for someone else to do it… But hopefully if it does come around, they’ll give me a shot.”
