Susan Sarandon Wraps Filming as Blue Beetle Villain

Despite there being little official information about her villain character, Susan Sarandon has completed filming for the upcoming role in Warner Bros. Blue Beetle movie. Sharing a post on her Instagram account, Sarandon announced that she has wrapped her role as Victoria Kord, a character that shares a surname with one of the original Blue Beetles, Ted Kord, and seems set to play a big role in the movie.

So far, details about the Blue Beetle movie have been pretty scarce, but as the film saw its release moved from being an HBO Max exclusive like Batgirl to getting a theatrical release, it is clear that Warner Bros are expecting big things from the film. The role of Victoria Kord was originally set to go to another Hollywood icon, Sharon Stone, but in April this year, it was revealed that Sarandon would be stepping into the role instead. She is joined by Raoul Max Trujillo, who plays the movie’s second villain, Carapax the Indestructible Man.

Blue Beetle Has Been in Development for a Long Time

Like many movie projects filming at the moment, Blue Beetle has been in development for a few years now. Originally announced in 2018, it was only in August 2021 that the project revealed that its lead actor had been cast in form of Cobra Kai star Xolo Mariduena. With filming having kicked off last month, it did not take long for images of Mariduena in his Blue Beetle costume to make it onto social media. While the pictures showed a comic-accurate appearance for the character, it left many hoping that there would be quite a bit of post-production done to make the suit come to life.

In this iteration of the comic books, Mariduena will be playing Jamie Reyes, the third character to have the mantle of Blue Beetle. Reyes, like his predecessors, will gain his powers from a sacred scarab, which once attached to him transforms him into a superhero capable of tackling bad guys on Earth and out in space. So far, the exact plot of the movie has remained under wraps, but considering the character’s lesser-known status amongst casual DC fans, the switch from HBO Max exclusive to theatrical release has caused a bit more intrigue in the project.

Since the merger between Warner Bros. and Discovery, there have been a number of changes made to the upcoming slate of movies and TV shows that were in various stages of development. One of the most significant changes seemed to be the decision that all DC movies will be aimed at cinemas rather than simply dropping on HBO Max, while there is a whole slate of TV shows that will be bolstering content on that platform. Although Blue Beetle gained an upgrade, surprisingly, Batgirl seems to still be heading directly to HBO Max, despite it having the big draw of a better known lead and the return of Michael Keaton’s Batman and J. K. Simmons as Jim Gordon.

Blue Beetle is currently schedules to hit theaters on Aug. 18, 2023.
