Stranger Things Fans Outraged at Sadie Sink Emmy Awards Snub

Warning: This article could contain spoilers for Stranger Things 4

While Stranger Things 4 managed to secure 13 nominations in yesterday’s Emmy Awards announcement, many believed that actress Sadie Sink was in line for a nomination for her portrayal of Max in the popular Netflix series. However, like the rest of the cast, Sink was dealt a snub when the nominations were announced, leading many fans of the show to take to social media to air their grievances with the Emmy’s panel.

Stranger Things, like many fantasy and horror shows, has done well in picking up technical nominations, with nods in production design, casting, music, and visual effect categories. It has also managed to secure a nomination for Outstanding Drama Series, although it faces a lot of tough competition in that one from the likes of Severance, Succession and Euphoria, who also litter the acting categories with multiple nominations.

When it comes to shows like Stranger Things though, there is something of the Marvel curse about them when it comes to actors and the roles they play. There is a tendency for dramatic or comedic performances to be overlooked due to the whimsical, fantastic, or horrific setting that the action encapsulates, and that is what many fans believe has happened in the case of Sadie Sink, in particular, being snubbed for her outstanding performance in the latest season of the show.

One comment posted by @joycelhopper, “You’re going to sit here and tell me with a straight face that sadie sink didn’t deserve an emmy after her performance in st4 when this exists???? she was ROBBED.”

Another user @milelmax added, “Sadie Sink put her whole soul into the performance this season.”

A third, @archivsadie, followed this with, “Sadie Sink definitely deserved a nomination, her performance on stranger things 4 was incredible.”

Sadie Sink’s Max Almost Didn’t Survive Stranger Things 4

While Max’s survival in the finale of Stranger Things is something that is hanging by a thread, there were original more definite plans for the character to be killed off by Vecna in the traumatic events of the season finale. Speaking after the last episodes debuted, Ross Duffer commented:

“It was discussed as a possibility. For a while that is what was going to happen. But we ended up in this…we wanted to end it with a little more of a question at the end of the season. It’s still really dark and if Max is going to be okay, we just don’t really know. We wanted to leave it up in the air moving forward into season five.”

While it is unclear what lies ahead for Max in the fifth season of the show, the fact she has been left alive, even if it is in a coma, suggests that her story is not yet done, and she could play a role of some kind in the final season. With many teases suggesting that Will is once again about to become the center of the story, there is a strong belief that despite the lack of main character’ meeting their end in season 4, that could all change as the series rushes towards its culmination in a couple of years’ time.
