Squid Game continues to shock the world with monumental feats, now becoming the first non-English-language show to receive an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Drama Series. Overall, the show notched 14 nominations, with Lee Jung-jae getting recognized in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a drama series category.

The Squid Game Universe is Expanding

Following the release and overwhelming reception of the first Squid Game season, it’s no surprise to anyone that Netflix was keen to fund another season. Last month, Squid Game Season 2 was officially announced and is currently in the works. In a statement posted to Twitter, Hwang Dong-hyuk shared his excitement for a new season and thanked fans of the show for their support.

“It took 12 years to bring the first season of ‘Squid Game’ to life last year. But it took 12 days for ‘Squid Game’ to become the most popular Netflix series ever. As the writer, director, and producer of ‘Squid Game,’ a huge shout out to fans around the world. Thank you for watching and loving our show. And now, Gi-hun returns. The Front Man returns. Season 2 is coming. The man in the suit with ddakji might be back. You’ll also be introduced to Young-hee’s boyfriend, Cheol-su. Join us once more for a whole new round.”

A second season of the top-rated show was inevitable. However, several other projects are in the works that fans might not expect. Hwang has been working with Netflix to create a mockumentary-style show inspired by the success of Squid Game, titled, The Best Show on the Planet. Hwang said the comedy was based on his experience of being pushed into the spotlight following the rapid success of his series.

In addition, Netflix announced a reality competition series, Squid Game: The Challenge, which is currently holding open casting calls. The ten-episode series will follow 456 players competing for $4.56 million, the largest prize pool of any reality competition series ever. Given the quick expansion of the Squid Game universe, don’t be surprised if you see even more spinoffs of the series soon.
