Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Directors Discuss the Debut of Villain, The Spot

The trio of directors behind the upcoming Sony sequel Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson, have revealed further details regarding the debut of obscure villain, The Spot. Speaking with Cartoon Brew, Dos Santos explained that they always knew The Spot would be the bad guy in the Into the Spider-Verse sequel, reasoning that the Z-List villain would be the perfect foil for Miles Morales.

“Pretty early on we knew the Spot was going to be our main villain. Without an awesome villain, who you sort of can understand with their through-line, you don’t really have a strong story for your main character. So he’s an awesome sort of opposite to Miles.”

While there have been rumors for some time that The Spot would be the main antagonist in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, his role in the animated follow-up was only recently confirmed. The filmmaker continued, describing The Spot’s power-set as “artistry come to life.” Perfect for the animated wonder of the Spider-Verse.

“And his living ink really is just, I think we’ve all been saying, it’s not just an effect. It’s artistry come to life. It’s something that can only really happen in animation,” the filmmaker continued. “You can imagine Spot as a dude in a sock suit in a live-action Spider-Man film. It’s not going to work. It’s just not going to work. So he’s art come to life. He’s the inkwell spilled on the page. It all goes back to sort of comic books and comic book art.”

Kemp Powers then added his insight into why the lesser-known Marvel supervillain is tailor-made for Across the Spider-Verse.

“From the very beginning he just seemed like endless potential, both visually and arc of the character. Because you know by the way that’s not a costume, that’s his skin. By the way that he’s wearing it you know it’s not a guy in a polka dot suit. That’s actually his skin. So you know, the arc of Dr. Ohnn Spot is one that does really complement, without giving away the story, it really does complement the the journey of Miles in this film really well.”

The Spot is the Main Villain of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, But Who is He?

Marvel Entertainment

So, we now know The Spot will be the one to cause all manner of multiversal headaches for Miles and his Spider-Friends. But who is he exactly? First emerging in the pages of Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man in the early ‘80s, The Spot is a somewhat more obscure member of Marvel’s rogue’s gallery. Created for Marvel Comics by Al Milgrom and Herb Trimpe, The Spot’s real name is Jonathan Ohnn, and has the ability to access and manipulate interdimensional portals which become adhered to his skin as a result of a lab accident.

Moonrise Kingdom and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World star Jason Schwartzman will provide the voice of Jonathan Ohnn AKA The Spot in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, with further information revealing that the character’s interdimensional portals “can send him anywhere he wants to go. He can also make these portals appear out of thin air to transport objects and people at will.” A particular set of skills that should come in very handy as he travels the Spider-Verse.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse stars Shameik Moore, Oscar Isaac, Hailee Steinfeld, Jake Johnson, and Issa Rae, and is scheduled to be released on June 2, 2023. A further sequel, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is set to be released in March 2024.
