Smallville Stars Tom Welling & Erica Durance Would Love to Return to Continue Their Multiverse Storyline

Smallville duo Tom Welling and Erica Durance have backed the idea of reprising their respective roles as Clark Kent and Lois Lane and continuing the multiversal story revealed during the CW’s Crisis on Infinite Earths event. Appearing at MCM Comic Con in London (via LegendaryDuo), both Welling and Durance revealed that they would love to come back for more as the iconic DC couple.

“Like our own multiverse? Sure. Why not,” Welling said when asked if he would be interested in exploring the multiversal plotline. “It’d be fun,” added Durance.

Created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, Smallville follows Welling as a young Clark Kent long before he ever donned the red cape and blue tights of Superman. Beginning back in 2002 and running for 10 seasons, the series chronicles the adolescent life of Clark Kent, depicting his formative years living in the small Kansas town of Smallville, discovering his powers, and navigating various facets of human drama. Erica Durance joined the series at the beginning of season 4, with Welling and Durance instantly finding a rapport perfect for Lois and Clark.

While Smallville was brought to an end back in 2011, Welling and Durance reprise their roles for the Arrowverse’s Crisis on Infinite Earths. A major crossover event, Crisis on Infinite Earths finds several heroes traveling the multiverse where they stumble upon Welling and Durance’s Clark and Lois. Now living a cozy family life with Lois, and without his powers, fans would surely love to explore this alternate Smallville timeline further. Though it would wise to find a way to give Clark his powers back…

Smallville Could Continue as an Animated Series

While there are currently no plans to continue the lives of Clark and Lois introduced during Crisis on Infinite Earths, Tom Welling has revealed that he is currently working on bringing a Smallville sequel to life as an animated series.

“We’re working on an animated series that picks up right after our Smallville [season 10], and, again, telling our own story and our vision is that we get Erica… it might be tough to get Allison [Mack]…,” the actor said earlier this year. “But even Sam Jones III and Lionel Luthor is going to be a big part of that. John Glover wants to do it, we’ve already been into this. We’ve already gotten animation, we just don’t have the stories yet because Al [Gough] and Miles [Millar] are busy doing Tim Burton-like movies.”

Reports of an animated continuation first began to circulate last year, with Smallville star Michael Rosenbaumm, who portrayed Superman’s archenemy Lex Luthor in the series, revealing that the project is in very early development. “Well, look, we’re not allowed really to talk about it now, because it’s in the early stages. So we’re developing it. We’re trying to see what happens with it, but that’s about all I can say right now,” he explained.

So, which Smallville project would you most like to see? An animated Smallville sequel? Or a continuation of the powerless Clark Kent and his family?
