In 2016, Illumination Entertainment released Sing, an animated musical set in a world of talking, singing, and dancing animals. The story followed a theater impresario’s idea to save his theater by holding a singing competition. This last-ditch effort turns into the opportunity of a lifetime for an assorted cast of participants who recognize the chance to fulfill their musical dreams and change their lives forever.
The film was released to critical acclaim and was a massive success at the box office, which led to a sequel. Now, with the return of its all-star cast (which includes Matthew McConaughey, Scarlett Johansson, Reese Witherspoon, and Taron Egerton) and some new additions, Sing 2 is here.

Sing 2: The Plot
Following the success of his talent show at the New Moon Theatre, Buster (McConaughey) looks to take things a step further by putting on a huge show at the prestigious Crystal Tower Theatre in the glamorous Red Shore City. With no business connections and only hopes and dreams to run on, Buster pitches the outlandish idea to mogul wolf Jimmy Crystal. With Gunter’s spur-of-the-moment help, Buster plans a big show featuring the return of reclusive rock legend Clay Calloway. The star hasn’t been seen since his wife’s death over a decade prior.
The only problem with this plan is that Buster has never met Clay, and Jimmy is not a man who likes to be lied to. So, with only three weeks to put the big show together, the gang of musically inclined animals must find Clay and convince him to join the show, all while dealing with Jimmy’s demands and watchful eye.
If there wasn’t enough pressure on this task, Jimmy Crystal is revealed to be something of a gangster type, meaning that there is more at stake for Buster than he realized when he pitched his idea. On top of that, he inserts his daughter Porcha to lead the show, taking Rosita’s spot, much to her dismay. They are not even sure they can get Clay to come out of retirement, making their task all the more desperate.
But just like in the last film, fans will experience the true power of music. What begins as big-time dreams will show how music can heal even the most broken of hearts.
Sing 2: The Cast
Most of the main cast from Sing reprises their roles for this second outing. Reese Witherspoon returns as Rosita, a pig who gave up her dream of stardom to be a housewife. Scarlett Johansson is back as the teenage rocker porcupine, Ash. Matthew McConaughey is back as the ambitious koala and owner of the Moon Theater, Buster Moon. Taron Egerton returns as ex-con gorilla Johnny. Tori Kelly is the teenage Indian elephant Meena, who had overcome her stage fright in the last film. And Nick Kroll will reprise as the dancing pig Gunter who gets partnered with Rosita for the show in Red Shore City.
As far as new additions to the cast, Sing 2 added some talented names to its roster. Music legend Bono of U2 fame will be making his animated film debut as the reclusive white lion, Clay Calloway, a former rock star who shut himself away from the world following the death of his beloved wife. He has not listened to or played any of his songs in that decade. Bobby Cannavale plays the arctic wolf mogul of Crystal Entertainment — and the film’s primary antagonist. Halsey is his daughter, the spoiled wolf Porsha. Pharrell Williams plays Alfonso, an elephant ice cream vendor (and potential love interest for Kelly’s Meena). Letitia Wright helps Johnny regain his confidence by teaching him choreography as the street dancing lynx Nooshy. Eric Andre plays a self-important yak and Meena’s partner with whom she has little chemistry in the show’s romantic duet.
Everyone new here is either a comedian or musically talented, making for a film that’s sure to be as fun as the first one.
Sing 2 had its theatrical release on December 21, 2021, after making its world premiere at AFI Fest the previous month. The film was released on DVD and Blu-ray on March 29, 2022. At that time, it was also available for purchase on VOD platforms like Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, and Vudu. Sing 2 began streaming on Netflix on June 22, 2022.
