It looks like Selena Gomez is about to jump on the ’80s reboot trend by starring as the lead in 20th Century’s Working Girl, a new take on the 1988 Melanie Griffith movie about a secretary with high ambitions that takes over the identity of her boss to try and get ahead. The movie was one of the biggest hits of the year and also gained six Oscar nods, including nominations for Best Picture, Best Actress, and supporting nods for her co-stars John Cusack and Sigourney Weaver.
Although the reboot seems to be in very early stages, and therefore there are no plot details currently available, it seems likely that the new movie will not stray too far from the premise of the original film. According to Deadline, Gomez is in final talks to produce the new movie, which will be heading to Hulu as an exclusive release, but so far, there has been no confirmation whether she would also be starring in it, although it would not be surprising if this was the case.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
Gomez is currently already appearing on Hulu in the hit series Only Murders in the Building alongside Steve Martin and Martin Short, and she has been getting a lot of attention for the role. Already having a strong relationship with Disney, it seems that they and their associated studios are not wanting to let the young star go anytime soon. If Gomez does take on the Griffith role in the movie, then it could be just another step up the ladder for her, and with any number of other nostalgic movies sitting in 20th Century’s vaults, she could soon find herself becoming one of the busiest stars in the business.
Working Girl Hopes to Tap Into Top Gun: Maverick’s Success
20th Century Studios
Hollywood has an unwritten rule that any movie over 30 years old is fair game for a remake or reboot, and just as many movies from the ’50s and ’60s formed a basis for hits of the ’80s and ’90s, it is now the latter’s turn to flood the box office with new versions of the movies that were the staple for those born around four decades ago.
While there have already been recent hits such as Ghostbusters: Afterlife, there is a seemingly vast stream of more nostalgic sequels and reboots to come, such as Hocus Pocus 2, Willow, Indiana Jones 5, and many more. However, when it comes to nostalgic returns, there are very few that are going to be able to match Top Gun: Maverick, which this year hit cinemas after a lengthy delay to become the highest grossing movie of the year, of Tom Cruise’s career and of Paramount’s history. It is mainly thanks to this incredible and, frankly, unexpected performance that many studios are now looking to revisit their 80s and 90s properties with a vengeance in the hope that a new sequel or reboot can deliver big at the box office.
Working Girl may not seem like a big blockbuster possibility, but it could still prove to be a decent crowd pleaser on Hulu. The film is being scripted by Diary of a Future President showrunner Ilana Pena. It is likely the movie would be looking to release sometime in late 2023 or 2024 if the studio can get a quick turnaround.
