Salma Hayek Calls Angelina Jolie the ‘Best Director I’ve Ever Worked With’

Salma Hayek has over 30 years of experience in Hollywood, with her breakout role coming in 1995 in the Robert Rodriguez-helmed From Dusk Till Dawn. The actor would go on to star in countless films; however, her work with one director, in particular, has left a lasting impact. Angelina Jolie and Salma Hayek are teaming up for her latest film, Without Blood, with Jolie sitting in the director’s chair.

Without Blood will explore “universal truths about war, trauma, memory, and healing,” based on the book of the same name by Alessandro Baricco. During an interview with Deadline, Hayek shared her praise for Jolie, calling her a ‘genius’ and ‘the best director I’ve ever worked with.’

“We just finished it. Angelina is the best director I’ve ever worked with. I absolutely loved working with her; enjoyed every second of it. It’s a tough piece but it was so delicious to come to work every single day. She is a genius and I think this might be her best movie yet. She did an amazing job, really. I was completely blown away by her mind, her dedication, her technical knowledge, and her control of every aspect, as well as her vision which is so clear. She is so good with the actors, so passionate, and so focused. But most of all, I was blown away by her kindness to every single person on the set. I talked about this with my co-star Demián Bichir, and we were saying, ‘Wow, she’s really something.'”

Jolie and Hayek had worked together before, as they appeared in Marvel’s Eternals in 2021. However, this is their first time in the director/actor relationship. Apparently, Hayek prefers Jolie to other former directors, including Steven Soderbergh, Robert Towne, and Oliver Stone. This is certainly high praise for Jolie, as expectations are rising for her latest directorial outing.

Angelina Jolie is Enthusiastic About Hayek’s Performance

Sony Pictures Releasing

According to PEOPLE, Angelina Jolie is just as passionate about Hayek’s performance as the actor is about Jolie’s directing role. During her interview, the Eternals star said Hayek and co-star Demián Bichir are both phenomenal in their roles, saying, ‘they both blew me away.’

“Salma and Demián are very authentic and brave in this film. I had been a fan of their work. I knew they would bring solid commitment and craft to the film but honestly, they both blew me away.”

Without Blood is the fifth feature film from Jolie, including her prior work with In the Land of Blood and Honey, Unbroken, By the Sea, and First They Killed my Father. Jolie told PEOPLE, ‘the book had an impact on me as it has so many other people. It carries themes and questions important to discuss.’ Audiences are excited to see how Without Blood stacks up against the rest of Jolie’s filmography. However, a release date is still unknown.
