There are plenty of head-scratching movies that come and go, and at the moment top of the “what exactly is it?” list is the upcoming Barbie movie. With the star power of Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Will Ferrell, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon and more on board, and Oscar nominee Greta Gerwig behind the camera, how the movie is going to turn out and be received is anyone’s guess. However, Ryan Gosling recently commented that he is doing the movie “for the Ken’s of the world.”
Barbie has been in development for a long time, going through many directors, writers and actors until settling on its current line-up of talent. In all that time though, there is still no one who seems to know exactly what the Barbie movie is going to be about, or what kind of audience the movie is going to be aimed toward. For his part, Ryan Gosling has now cleared up why he is doing the movie, although it has to be said that his comments are more than a little tongue-in-cheek. While at the premiere of The Gray Man, his new Netflix movie, Gosling told Variety:

“This has been coming my whole life. I think a lot of Kens will feel seen when they see this. Gotta do it for the Kens of the world. Nobody plays with Kens!”
Barbie Will Not Be What Anyone Expects
Warner Bros. Pictures
So far there has been one common thread running through the comments by those involved in Barbie, and that is the movie will not be what anyone thinks it is. This line has been said by Margot Robbie when she was first announced for the lead role, by director Grewig and now by Gosling, as he continued to briefly tease the movie. He continued:
“It’s not what you think it is. Unless it is, and then you know what it is, but I don’t think that’s what you think it is. I can’t wait for people to see the film. That’s all I can say, otherwise Mattel will come and box me up.”
While there has been no official synopsis for Barbie, a leaked synopsis suggests that the movie will see Barbie and Ken living in “Barbieworld,” along with other Barbie and Ken variants. Disillusioned with her life, Barbie wants to be part of the real world, and together with Ken she escapes and ends up being hunted down by a toy company owner, played by Ferrell. Set photos have seemed to support this, with images revealing Robbie and Gosling being chased on roller skates by Ferrell, but other than that there is still no official word on whether this is the actual storyline.
In the end, everyone involved in the project seems to be certain that they are working on a great movie, and despite the very stereotypical Barbie images that have been seen so far, with plenty of pink and fluorescent colors everywhere, there is still that belief that the movie is going to defy any expectations that people have for the film. We will find out the truth next summer when Barbie arrives in cinemas.
