Ruben Fleischer to Direct Now You See Me 3

It would appear that the threequel Now You See Me 3 is back on track at Lionsgate. THR reports that Ruben Fleischer (Venom, Uncharted) is now on board to direct the long-gestating sequel. The screenplay for the third installment of the movie series comes from Seth Grahame-Smith penning a new draft (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies) with Fleischer overseeing. A previous version of the script was penned by Eric Warren Singer (Top Gun: Maverick).

“There are three things in this world I absolutely love… Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, and magic,” Fleischer, who also helmed Eisenberg and Harrelson in two Zombieland movies, said of directing Now You See Me 3. “To have the chance to work with these two talented actors, as well as rest of the incredible cast of the Now You See Me movies is a dream come true. I am a lifelong fan of heist movies – I love getting drawn in by the twists and the mystery where nothing is what it seems. And that’s even more true when the thieves are magicians – the opportunities are endless. Eric was able to unlock a fresh and exciting way into a new movie and fun new characters, so I’m excited to dig in even further.”

Lionsgate Motion Picture Group President Nathan Kahane is also quoted as saying, “Ruben has proven time and again that he has a special talent with character-driven blockbuster entertainment. He delivers big excitement while ultimately keeping the focus on the characters audiences care about. We feel like we’ve assembled a dream team to get this movie off the ground. For everyone we’ve kept in suspense, the wait is almost over.”

Now You See Me 3 Has Been in Development Hell for Years

Released in 2013, the original Now You See Me was directed by Louis Leterrier and written by Ed Solomon, Boaz Yakin, and Edward Ricourt. It features an ensemble cast including Mark Ruffalo, Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Isla Fisher, Dave Franco, Melanie Laurent, Michael Caine, and Morgan Freeman. The film follows an FBI agent and Interpol detective teaming up to take on a team of magicians who pull off major heists during their performances.

Given that the movie was a big success at the box office, it was given an official sequel. Now You See Me 2 was directed by Jon M. Chu, though Solomon returned to pen the script based on a story he crafted with Peter Chiarelli. In the sequel, the Four Horsemen are recruited by a criminal mastermind to steal a data chip. Also starring Daniel Radcliffe, Lizzy Caplan, Jay Chou, and Sanaa Lathan, the sequel was similarly a box office success when it hit theaters in 2016.

Planing on Now You See Me 3 was already in the works before Now You See Me 2 was even released, but getting the threequel developed has taken a bit of time. At one point, a planned version of the sequel was in gestation with Caplan on board to return alongside Benedict Cumberbatch as a new character, though that version of the project has fizzled out. Eric Warren Singer was also on board to write the script before Seth Grahame-Smith was brought in.

Now You See Me 3 does not have a premiere date at this time.
