Prey First Reactions Call it the Predator Movie We’ve All Been Waiting For

The first reactions to Prey are now in. And it sounds like it will be the Predator installment that we’ve all been waiting for. Directed by Dan Trachtenberg, Prey finally premiered at the San Diego Comic-Con last night, and lucky viewers cannot find enough praise to heap upon the Predator prequel. Taking to social media to share their feelings about the movie, phrases such as “my favorite Predator movie,” “the sequel the Predator franchise needed,” and “this surpasses the original film!” are used throughout these first reactions.

From 20th Century Studios, Prey is the latest outing in the long-running Predator franchise. Directed by Dan Trachtenberg (The Boys, 10 Cloverfield Lane), Prey explores the first time a member of the alien hunter race came to Earth. Set in the Comanche Nation 300 years ago, Prey tells the story of a young woman, Naru, a fierce and highly skilled warrior. She has been raised in the shadow of some of the most legendary hunters who roam the Great Plains, so when danger threatens her camp, she sets out to protect her people.

The first Predator has carved out a legacy as one of the best examples of a sci-fi action monster movie. While the franchise since has been something of a…mixed bag, those who sat down to watch Prey have walked away calling the successor one that Predator fans have been crying out for.

Amber Midthunder Excels in Her Battle Against the Predator

Prey stars Legion and The Ice Road actress Amber Midthunder as Naru, the young Comanche warrior who protects her tribe against a Predator. And much of the applause has been aimed her way, with Midthunder reportedly owning the screen as she takes the fight to the technologically advanced alien trophy hunter.

Director Dan Trachtenberg worked from a script written by Patrick Aison, with the idea behind Prey having always been to take the franchise back to what made the first outing work so well – and it sounds like these aspirations have been achieved. And then some.

Predator fans have waited far too long for the potential sparked by the first Predator movie to be fully realized, and while it may have taken a little while to get there, it certainly sounds like Prey will have been worth the wait.

Following such a glowing reaction from the audience at San Diego Comic-Con, it sounds like director Dan Trachtenberg will get his wish and use Prey to spawn further adventures for the Predator. “There are a lot of exciting ideas for what could be next for the franchise,” Trachtenberg said of his hopes for beloved franchise recently. “The things that most excite me are the boldest swings and I think there’s scope to do other things that haven’t been done before.”

Starring Dakota Beavers, Stormee Kipp, Michelle Thrush, Julian Black Antelope, and Dane DiLiegro as the Predator alongside Amber Midthunder, Prey is the first of the Predator movies to fall under the Disney umbrella, and while there had been some concerns about this, the movie is rated R for “strong bloody violence.”

Prey is scheduled to be released by 20th Century Studios as a Hulu original film on August 5, 2022.
