Paramount Delays the Ryan Reynolds Led Film, If, to 2024

Paramount is moving around its release calendar, delaying their forthcoming project If, starring Ryan Reynolds. According to reports from Variety, the movie will premiere on May 24th, 2024, several months behind its initial date of Nov. 17th, 2023. John Krasinski will helm If and join the cast as one of its stars. He’s joined by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Cailey Fleming, Louis Gossett Jr., Fiona Shaw, Alan S. Kim, and Steve Carell. This will be the first time Krasinski reunites with Carrell, eight years after The Office finished airing. The actor and filmmaker previously directed Carell on three episodes of the comedy series.

If (previously titled Imaginary Friends) is based on an original idea from Krasinski about a child’s journey in rediscovering their imagination. The project has been in development since 2019 and was a sought-after film in a bidding war with multiple studios before Paramount Pictures won the rights.

Krasinski, along with Allyson Seeger and Andrew Form, will produce the movie through their Sunday Night Productions company. Ryan Reynolds will produce through Maximum Effort, while George Dewey is set as executive producer through Maximum Effort. If will be the first non-horror directorial effort for Krasinski since The Hollars in 2016. The filmmaker is also known for his work as the director and star of A Quiet Place, which received a sequel in 2020 titled, A Quiet Place Part II. The prequel, which recently received its title, A Quiet Place: Day One, has been delayed from Sept. 22nd, 2023, to March 8th, 2024.

Steve Carell is Excited to Reunite with Krasinski in If

Krasinski and Carell have a long working relationship together, dating back to 2005 at the start of The Office. Carell would star as Michael Scott in the series, working at Dunder Mifflin Paper Company for seven seasons before exiting the NBC mockumentary. Krasinski would stay on for an additional two seasons until The Office wrapped up its final episode in 2013. Until now, the duo has yet to reunite for a project. However, the pair will share the screen again when If releases in theaters in 2024.

During an interview with ET, Carell shared his excitement to work with Krasinski and joked about how high maintenance he would be on set.

“Well, I haven’t started working on the film yet, but I can’t wait. I’m anticipating just joy and fun. I mean, he’s the best, and he’s a great director. I’ll put him through his paces, you know? I’ll make him work for it. I might be one of those persnickety actors that doesn’t always agree, or won’t come out of my trailer. You think you hired somebody that is a friend, but you got that wrong!”

It will be great to see their on-screen chemistry once again in If, with the new release date set for May 24th, 2024.
