Owen Wilson’s Superhero Movie Secret Headquarters Shifts to Paramount+ Release

Owen Wilson’s new comedy movie Secret Headquarters is being released exclusively on Paramount+ this August. Jerry Bruckheimer Films produces the new superhero movie along with Paramount and the film will see Wilson leading an impressive cast in a story of heroes, villains and an adventure to save the world. Having dipped into the superhero world as part of Marvel’s Loki, Wilson should feel like he is right at home in the genre, and from the released synopsis, the film sounds like a fun ride.

Secret Headquarters’ synopsis reads: “While hanging out after school, Charlie and his friends discover the headquarters of the world’s most powerful superhero hidden beneath his home. When villains attack, they must team up to defend the headquarters and save the world.”

As well as Owen, the movie features Walker Scobell, Jesse Williams, Keith L. Williams, Momona Tamada, Abby James Witherspoon, and Michael Peña. Directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman from a screen play they co-wrote with Thor: Ragnarok scribe Christopher Yost and Orange is the New Black’s Josh Koenigsberg, the movie seems like a perfect summer blockbuster for the small screen. That is something that Paramount Streaming’s chief programming officer Tanya Giles said of the release. She said: “Secret Headquarters is the perfect action-packed summer film for the whole family, making it a perfect fit for Paramount+ and our mountain of entertainment geared toward the whole household.”

Owen Wilson’s Return to Mainstream Projects Started With Loki

Marvel Studios / Disney

Owen Wilson became a staple of comedy movies in the early 2000s, with star turns in Zoolander, Starsky and Hutch, Wedding Crashers and You, Me and Dupree, but following his role in The Intern in 2013, Wilson took a step back from big studio movies to focus on supporting roles in smaller indie projects. However his first leap back into high profile work came with Marvel Studios’ Disney+ series of Loki, which he starred in alongside Tom Hiddleston’s title character. As the character of Mobius M. Mobius, Wilson gained a lot of praise for the part and will be returning to the role when the series returns for a second season.

Wilson has added a decent list of projects to his slate, with Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch being released last year, Marry Me, with Jennifer Lopez, having released in February 2022, and Disney’s Haunted Mansion movie coming in 2023. While Secret Headquarters was originally listed as releasing in cinemas on August 12, it was then pulled forward to August 5 and has now been moved to a directing streaming release on that same date.

With superhero movies being big business at the moment, this alternative to the MCU and DCEU is a movie that could well gain a reasonable amount of interest on Paramount+. With many non-franchise movies still struggling to break through in cinemas, Paramount could have played the release just right to help bolster Paramount+ subscriber numbers and avoid the film being lost in among some of the huge, long delayed blockbuster movies that are finally releasing in theaters this summer.
