Neve Campbell’s Sydney Was Originally Part of Scream 6’s Story

One of the biggest disappointments for Scream fans was the announcement that Neve Campbell will not be reprising her role of Sydney Prescott in Scream 6. Having been a part of the franchise since Wes Craven’s original 1996 movie, Campbell did return for this year’s fifth movie, simply titled Scream, but due seemingly to a pay dispute decided not to join Courteney Cox in the next installment even though Sydney was seemingly part of the original script.

The Scream franchise started out as a horror movie that not only broke the rules of horror movies, but played directly into them in a self-ridiculing way that made it an instant success. Under the direction of Wes Craven, Scream redefined the slasher movie, and continued to be a popular franchise across three sequels. Following the death of Craven, it took a long time for anyone to decide to take on the franchise but in January this year, Scream returned to theaters with original cast members Cox, Campbell and David Arquette all reprising their long-standing roles.

While Courteney Cox was announced to once again play Gale Weathers in Scream 6, with Hayden Panettiere reprising her Scream 4 role of Kirby Reed, and Scream (2022) stars Jenny Ortega and Melissa Barrera continuing their time in the franchise, Neve Campbell’s departure was revealed last month. At the time reports stated that Campbell felt “the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise.” Appearing at Mad Monster Party Arizona, Campbell was asked if her role had ever been part of Scream 6, and Campbell was very brief and to the point in confirming:

“There were plans for Sidney, and they are no longer, unfortunately. I’m sure they’ll make a good movie.”

Neve Campbell Could Return To Scream In The Future

Paramount Pictures Studios

Despite fans expressing their disappointment at Campbell’s departure, and her former co-stars calling out the studio for not paying the actress a higher wage considering her dedication to the franchise, Scream 6 will be going ahead without an appearance by Sydney Prescott. However, there have since been rumors that Paramount have discussed a possible return for Campbell in a seventh Scream movie, but only time, and Scream 6’s box office, will tell whether that will come to pass in the next few years.

Scream 6 is making a number of changes, including a shift from California to New York City, and has been described in official blurb as “a fresh chapter” in the horror franchise. With the movie already filming, images from the set have already shown Cox back in her role as Gale Weathers. Like Campbell, Cox has been part of the franchise since the original movie, and fans her at least happy to see her back for the new film. Having once again survived another Ghostface killing spree in Scream (2022), whether she can once again avoid the sharp end of a knife is something that will be revealed when Scream 6 hits theaters early in 2023.
