Nathan Lane Says Ari Aster’s Disappointment Blvd. Won’t Release Till Next Year, and May Debut at Cannes

Nathan Lane is set to star in Ari Aster’s latest film, Disappointment Blvd. The movie had an initial release date in 2022, however, it seems that target will be getting pushed back. The film is described as an American comedy horror movie and will be the third collaboration between Aster and A24, following Hereditary and Midsommar.

Lane recently sat down with Deadline to discuss setting Emmy records, Only Murders in the Building, and his work on Disappointment Blvd.

“I think maybe they’re aiming for Cannes next year, and I’m told that it may not be called Disappointment Blvd. anymore, that it’s going to have a different title. I saw Ari Aster just this last week and what I saw looked pretty interesting funny and scary. It’s a unique project. It’s like he’s invented a whole new genre, and it’s all anchored by Joaquin Phoenix, who’s just extraordinary.”

Regardless of the film’s name, Ari Aster’s latest project is sure to make a splash when it releases in theaters. Disappointment Blvd. features a star-studded cast alongside Phoenix and Lane, including Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone), Parker Posey (Dazed and Confused), Michael Gandolfini (The Many Saints of Newark), Zoe Lister-Jones (Band Aid), and Kylie Rogers (Yellowstone). In addition, Ari Aster is writing and producing the movie, with Elisa Alvares, Timo Argillander, Len Blavatnik, and Danny Cohen signing on as executive producers.

Audiences should expect to see Disappointment Blvd. land in theaters sometime in 2023.

Ari Aster & Joaquin Phoenix is a Match Made in Heaven

Ari Aster is one of the most creative filmmakers working today, with Joaquin Phoenix being one of the most versatile actors in the industry. With just two feature-length credits, Aster has made a name for himself in Hollywood with his excellent directing techniques and memorable, horrifying films. In our review for Hereditary, we said, ‘This isn’t a man with a lot of experience, but this feels like a movie made by someone who has the skill and wisdom that can only come from years of dedication to the craft.’ Aster followed up his debut with Midsommar in 2019, starring Florence Pugh. The psychological horror was original, creative, and terrifying, which further solidified Aster’s place in Hollywood.

Joaquin Phoenix is one of the most talented actors working today, and pairing him with an inventive, young director like Aster should only lead to success. Phoenix is a four-time Oscar nominee and won Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in 2020 for his part as Arthur Fleck in Joker.

It will be interesting to see what the duo can devise with Disappointment Blvd. and how Aster can improve his already stellar work from his first two films.
