Murderville to Return at Netflix with New Christmas Special

Detective Terry Seattle hasn’t solved his final murder mystery just yet. Per Variety, it has been announced that Will Arnett will return as the sleuth in a Murderville holiday special. Joining Arnett will be celebrity guest stars Jason Bateman (Ozark) and Maya Rudolph (Disenchanted). Just in time for Christmas, the special will premiere on Netflix on Dec. 15, 2022. A teaser trailer has been released to provide a sneak peek at the special, which has been dubbed Who Killed Santa? A Murderville Murder Mystery. Watch it below.

Other cast members alongside Arnett, Rudolph, and Bateman include Eliza Coupe, Kurt Braunohler, Haneefah Wood, Lilan Bowden, Dennice Cisneros, Tawny Newsome, and Courtney Parchman.

The streamer has also released a synopsis for the Murderville Christmas special, which you can read below.

“Senior Detective Terry Seattle is back and this time, the case is critical. Along with his two celebrity guest stars, Jason Bateman and Maya Rudolph, he is on a mission to figure out…who killed Santa? But here’s the catch: Jason Bateman and Maya Rudolph aren’t being given the script. They have no idea what’s about to happen to them. Together, with Terry Seattle (and many surprises), they will have to improvise their way through the case… but it will be up to both of them to name the killer.”

Murderville Returns With a Christmas Special, But What About Season 2?

Inspired by the British series Murder in Successville, Murderville premiered on Netflix in February. Every episode features Will Arnett as Detective Terry Seattle as he teams up with celebrity guest stars to investigate murder mysteries. The catch is that the guest actors are not given the script, meaning they have to improvise their acting while trying to legitimately guess who the killer is. Some celebrities get it right while others don’t. Season 1, which also starred Haneefah Wood, Lilian Bowden, and Phillips Smithey, brought in guest stars Conan O’Brien, Marshawn Lynch, Kumail Nanjiani, Annie Murphy, Sharon Stone, and Ken Jeong.

Officially, Murderville hasn’t been renewed nor canceled since its premiere, leaving the fate of the show still unknown. Netflix moving forward with a new Christmas special could be a way of testing the waters before committing to a full-season renewal. Perhaps if viewership is high for the special, the news of a season 2 order could end up following soon after, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Krister Johnson serves as Murderville showrunner and wrote the special with Owen Burke, Marina Cockenberg, and Kerry O’Neill. Arnett executive produces with Marc Forman, Jonathan Stern, Peter Principato, and Brian Steinberg. Laura Murphy directed.
