Ms. Marvel Head Writer Says There Were Originally Other Plans for *That* Cameo

Spoilers for Ms. Marvel ahead!

Ms. Marvel always seemed to be destined to feature a cameo by Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, but no one really saw it happening in quite the mysterious way it did. According to the series head writer Bisha K. Ali, there were originally different plans for Ms. Marvel’s crossover with Captain Marvel, which would have also taken place earlier in the show. The finale not only saw Kamala Khan taking full control of her new powers but also discovering that she is potentially a mutant and then finding herself trading places with Larson’s established Marvel heroine, which all leaves many questions ahead of the young superhero’s next appearance in The Marvels. While speaking to Variety, Ali explained:

“Certainly at the very, very, very beginning, way back when, that was part of the conversation. The more I kind of dug deeper into what I wanted to say with the show and what I wanted to her to go through, it really had to be about her and her community, her family and her friends. So Carol’s meeting up with her after this journey that she’d been through in the season. She’s Kamala in her own right. She’s looking in the mirror at the end — she’s not seeing an imitation of Captain Marvel the way that she’s seeing in Episode 1. She’s seeing Kamala wearing a suit that her mother made for her, with the masks that Bruno made for her, with the sash from Red Dagger — then, moments later, she gets her name from her own father. That moment is about her becoming her in her own right.

So I think it would have really taken it off in a different direction if she’d met [Carol] any sooner than she will meet her, which is in the movie that’s coming out next year. She’s still gonna be so excited and just so happy to meet, when they finally do get to meet. But in this journey, in this character arc, it felt really important, actually, that they didn’t meet.”

Ms. Marvel Star Freaked Out When She Read The Finale Script

The season finale of Ms. Marvel made a number of revelations and leads Kamala Khan into many possible MCU adventures in the future. When getting the script for the finale, star Iman Vellani recently revealed that she was unable to believe it when she read that she was going to be seemingly one of the first mutants in the MCU. Vellani said:

“They sent me, and only me, the draft [of the final episode], and I immediately freaked out. I emailed Kevin Feige in all caps. I was like, ar you doing this like for real? Are you sure? I’m so honored! I was like yelling at hime through an email. I was freaking out. This is the biggest deal in the world, and the fact that it’s happening in our show is crazy.”

With the X-Men coming soon to the MCU, the reveal of Kamala Khan being a mutant is the first small step to mutant characters being fully incorporated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While it may take a while to see the first full X-Men movie arrive, we can now expect more frequent and low-key mentions to come in the next year or so.

The entire Ms. Marvel series is now available on Disney+.
