Michael B. Jordan is Bookies Favorite to Play Superman

Black Panther star Michael B. Jordan has emerged as the odds-on favorite to take over the iconic comic book role of Superman from Henry Cavill. Online gambling site, Bovada, has been crunching the numbers over which actor is most likely to don the red cape as The Man of Steel, with Jordan the front-runner just ahead of Doom Patrol star Matt Bomer and Moon Knight actor Oscar Isaac.

Following the no doubt tireless research that goes into these things, the site has found that Michael B. Jordan could make the jump from Marvel to DC as Superman. Jordan leads the way with +125, with Matt Bomer at +150, Oscar Isaac with +500, and Donald Glover with +1000. Sadly, the list quickly becomes far less interesting, with the likes of Zachary Levi, who already headlines a DC movie as Shazam!, followed by Tyler Hoechlin, Brandon Routh, Dean Cain, and Tom Welling, all of whom have played Superman in previous projects.

Creed actor Michael B. Jordan has been a fan-favorite casting suggestion for some time, with the actor often topping the list of recommendations for who should play the likes of Calvin Ellis and Val-Zod. In fact, Jordan is already reportedly developing his own Black Superman project, which will center on the Earth-2 character Val Zod. One of the last Kryptonians of his universe, Val Zod lives an insular life and is largely unaware of his powers until catastrophic events force him to come out of hiding and don the mantle of Superman. The live-action project is being developed for HBO Max, with Transformers: Rise of the Beasts writers Darnell Metayer and Josh Peters having recently signed on to pen the script.

Jordan has responded to the idea of playing Superman before saying, “You hear the whispers and the rumors and stuff like that and it’s just a compliment. You know, I appreciate people that think about me in that type of way for these roles.” At the time, the actor went onto admit that, while there have not been any conversations regarding him taking the role, he finds it flattering. “I don’t really have anything more to give on that other than it’s just flattering and I appreciate it. But, you know, whoever they get or if it goes that way, I think it’ll be an interesting thing to see.”

Several Superman Projects Are Currently in Development

Warner Bros. Pictures

Michael B. Jordan is not the only one working on bringing Superman back to the screen. Star Trek and Star Wars director J.J. Abrams is set to produce another Superman-centered project, with comic book writer Ta-Nehisi Coates’ on board to write the script. This Superman reboot will reportedly center on a Black actor as the titular DC superhero, with recent reports claiming that the script will be ready “soon,” and that Ta-Nehisi Coates is “crafting a Kal-El in the vein of the original Superman comics and will have the protagonist hail from Krypton and come to Earth.” Further speculation claims that the project could be “a 20th century period piece.”

Recent reports have stated that, since the Warner Bros. and Discovery merger, the studio is looking to refocus its attention on the likes of Superman. So, expect a lot of news regarding Superman to emerge. Something which many hope will eventually include the return of Man of Steel and Justice League star Henry Cavill to the coveted role.
