Mad Max Prequel Furiosa Has Begun Filming

The prequel to the 2015 film Mad Max: Fury Road, Furiosa, has begun filming. The project has been in active development since at least 2020. Chris Hemsworth confirmed the news today with a post on his Twitter account.

The plot details read: “The origin story of renegade warrior Furiosa before she teamed up with Mad Max in Fury Road.” The film will center on Charlize Theron’s character, Imperator Furiosa, albeit a bit younger. Anya Taylor-Joy is taking over the role from Theron, known for The Queen’s Gambit, The Witch, and most recently, The Northman. Chris Hemsworth, Angus Sampson, Nathan Jones, and Tom Burke are joining her. George Miller is returning to direct.

In 2015, Mad Max: Fury Road was a significant success. The movie made nearly $400 million at the box office on a $150 million budget, and audiences and critics praised the film for its use of practical effects, exemplary cinematography, and superb direction. Fury Road went on to win six Oscars, an outstanding achievement. George Miller is hoping to recreate this level of success, with The Wrap reporting editor Margaret Sixel, production designer Colin Gibson, costume designer Jenny Beavan and most of the crafts team are all set to return.

The Saga Begins

Warner Bros. Pictures

Although the events of Mad Max: Fury Road took place over three days and two nights, Variety reports that Furiosa will be a saga, taking place over 15 years. The film is reportedly scaling back the action and focusing on the character of Furiosa more than anything else. According to the book Blood, Sweat & Chrome: The Wild and True Story of ‘Mad Max: Fury Road,’ “Furiosa is more of a traditional three-act drama. If people are expecting to see another chase movie, it’s not going to be that.” It’s fair to say that although this may have a different tone than Fury Road, the film will undoubtedly involve some very well-made action sequences.

This won’t be the last time we are in the Mad Max universe. George Miller has kicked around the idea for Mad Max: The Wasteland, which will be a direct sequel to the 2015 film. The plan is to bring Tom Hardy back and take a look at his journey following the events of Fury Road. However, with the lengthy production times of both Mad Max and Furiosa, we shouldn’t expect to see The Wasteland anytime soon. Luckily, Furiosa is set to release on May 24th, 2024.
