The latest clip from the upcoming Pixar outing, Lightyear, introduces us to robotic cat and Buzz’s companion, Sox. The character, who is voiced by Peter Sohn, is sure to run away with the movie, and will no doubt emerge as a fan favorite as well as the hottest toy this holiday season — much like the Space Ranger before him.
The clip has been shared on social media by Discussing Film (via Fandango) and offers us a further look at Lightyear. The footage begins with a lonely Buzz Lightyear (Chris Evans) activating his pussycat pal, Sox, who quite quickly reveals that he talks far too much and has Buzz longing for loneliness once again.
Luckily for Buzz, Peter Sohn’s Sox will not be the only companion joining the intrepid Space Ranger on his first solo adventure away from the world of Toy Story. The supporting cast starring in Lightyear alongside Marvel actor Chris Evans includes Keke Palmer as Izzy Hawthorne, Dale Soules as Steel, Taika Waititi as Morrison, Uzo Aduba as Alicia Hawthorne, Mary McDonald-Lewis as Qurinside, Efren Ramirez as Diaz, Isiah Whitlock Jr. as Commander Burnside, and James Brolin as Emperor Zurg.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
Produced by Pixar Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures and directed by Angus MacLane, Lightyear will act as both a Toy Story spinoff and an in-universe movie. The story revolves around the origin of the fictional Buzz Lightyear, the character who inspired the popular action figure in the Toy Story franchise.
Lightyear follows Buzz as he prepares to embark on his first test flight to explore new galaxies for Star Command. Marooned on a hostile planet 4.2 million light-years from Earth, alongside his commander and their crew, Buzz must try to find a way back home through space and time. Complicating matters and threatening the mission is the arrival of Zurg, an imposing presence with an army of ruthless robots and a mysterious agenda. Buzz might just be the only hope to stop him and save the galaxy.
Early Reactions to Lightyear Call it Another Delightful Pixar Masterpiece
Lightyear has now screened for a lucky few, who have since taken to social media to heap praise on Pixar’s latest adventure. “Lightyear is out of this world fantastic!” said one critic. “A fun & heartfelt film that revived my childhood nostalgia while taking me on a new epic sci-fi journey. @ChrisEvans does a great job taking over the mantle as #BuzzLightyear & #Sox is my fave Pixar character & completely stole the show.”
While many had wondered how Lightyear would fare when taking the character out of Toy Story and into the real-world, it sounds like we never should have doubted the seminal animation studio. “#Lightyear is exactly what Pixar fans likely expected: it’s fun, it’s exciting, and it’s one of the most visually stunning films in their portfolio,” said another early reaction. “Still, the most impressive accomplishment is introducing us to a new Buzz that is both familiar and entirely fresh.”
Lightyear is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on June 17, 2022.
