Latest Avatar: The Way of Water Footage Further Teases War on Pandora

New footage from the long-awaited sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, teases war on Pandora. “Our home. Our family. Our fortress,” reads the tagline alongside the footage, which sees the blissful family life of Jake and Neytiri come crashing down when the militaristic RDA returns for resources and revenge. Check out the newly released footage (via @AvatarOfficial) from Avatar: The Way of Water below.

Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water tells the story of the Sully family, the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.

The first of several Avatar sequels will pick up some 13 years after the first record-breaking outing, introducing audiences to Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri’s (Zoe Saldaña) new family. This will include several native Na’vi children, Neteyam (Jamie Flatters), Lo’ak (Britain Dalton), and Tuktirey (Trinity Bliss), as well as the human child Miles Socorro, also known as Spider, played by The Night Sitter star Jack Champion, who Jake takes in after the child is born at the now-abandoned military base on Pandora.

“I’m a father of five. I look around – I don’t want to specifically say the Marvel Universe, or the DC Universe – at current fantasy and science-fiction and all these heroes seem unbound in the mire of relationships, the stuff that pulls you down and clips your wings, that stops you running around and risking your life,” James Cameron explained when asked about following a family in the sequel. “I thought, ‘What if I take these incredible characters of Jake and Neytiri and give them a family?’ That gives them feet of clay right there.”

Avatar: The Way of Water is on Track for a Big Opening Weekend…And It Will Need It

20th Century Studios

Avatar: The Way of Water will need to see big numbers at the box office to be considered a financial success. Cameron recently called the sci-fi action sequel “the worst business case in movie history,” and revealed that “You have to be the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history. That’s your threshold. That’s your break even.”

Thankfully, current projections are looking very promising indeed, with Avatar: The Way of Water on track for an opening at around $150 million domestically when it debuts in theaters next month. Further reports have even claimed that the movie could reach heights of $175 million plus. An opening of $150 million would almost double the opening of the first Avatar back in 2009, which managed to rake in $77 million before becoming the biggest movie of all time thanks to its $2.7 billion box office.

Directed by James Cameron, Avatar: The Way of Water stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Stephen Lang, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Giovanni Ribisi, Dileep Rao, and Matt Gerald, each of whom will reprise their roles from the original movie, with Sigourney Weaver returning as a new character. One which may have ties to her old character. New cast members include Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, and Brendan Cowell.

Avatar: The Way of Water is due for release on December 16, 2022. A further three sequels have also been given release dates, with the multiple follow-ups scheduled to be released on December 20, 2024, December 18, 2026, and December 22, 2028, respectively.
