Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes Rounds Out Supporting Cast with Sweet Tooth, Cowboy Bebop & Unbroken Stars

The upcoming Planet of the Apes sequel/prequel Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes continues to round out is supporting cast, adding the likes of Travis Jeffery (Unbroken), Neil Sandilands (Sweet Tooth), Sara Wiseman (One of Us Is Lying), Ras-Samuel Welda’abzgi (The Clearing), and Lydia Peckham (Cowboy Bebop). Revealed by Deadline, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will clearly be led by a hugely talented ensemble cast, though for the time being their roles in the movie are being kept under wraps.

Travis Jeffery is best known for roles in the likes of Angelina Jolie’s World War II movie Unbroken and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, as well as roles on the small screen in the likes of Netflix’s Heartbreak High, Preacher, and Gallipoli. Neil Sandilands, meanwhile, is known for the Netflix Sweet Tooth and The CW shows The Flash and The 100.

Sara Wiseman has starred in such small screen projects as One Of Us Is Lying and A Place to Call Home, while Ras-Samuel Welda’abzgi is best-recognized for The Clearing and the short film Blvck Gold. Finally, Lydia Peckham is known for roles in Only Cloud Knows and most recently, the Netflix live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop.

Not much is yet known about Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, but it has been revealed that the movie will act as both a prequel to the iconic 1968 original and as a sequel to the more recent, but no-less excellent, War for the Planet of the Apes. Based on the recently released concept artwork for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, the story will pick up many years after the modern Planet of the Apes trilogy and will no doubt follow an ape (perhaps an ancestor of Caesar) as they strive to live as the now-dominant species.

Filming on Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is now underway in Sydney, Australia. The project is being helmed by The Maze Runner director Wes Ball, who has assured fans of the decade-spanning franchise that the Planet of the Apes is in good hands. “We have a take. We have a way of staying in the universe that was created before us, but we’re also opening ourselves up in being able to do some really cool new stuff. Again, I’m trying to be careful here. I’ll say this, for fans of the original three, don’t worry — you’re in good hands,” Ball said back in May 2020.

Written by Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, and Patrick Aison, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will be led by It star Owen Teague and The Witcher’s Freya Allan, with the former playing the main ape, with the latter set to play the main human character. X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Locke and Key star Kevin Durand was recently cast as the villain.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is scheduled to be released in the United States on May 24, 2024.
