Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes Adds Swamp Thing Star Kevin Durand as the Villain

The upcoming sequel, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, continues to round out its cast, adding Jessica Jones star Eka Darville and X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Locke and Key star Kevin Durand to the roster. These latest additions have been revealed in a report by Deadline, and while details of Darville’s role remain a mystery, Durand will play another ape and is “likely to be the villain” of the sequel.

Eka Darville is best known for roles in the likes of The Vampire Diaries and the spinoff The Originals, the drama series Empire, and the Marvel series Jessica Jones, in which he played private investigator and an ally of Jessica Jones, Malcolm Ducasse.

As for Kevin Durand, the hulking actor is known for roles on both the big and small screen including Swamp Thing, Vikings, and Locke & Key on the small screen and X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Robin Hood, Legion, and Resident Evil: Retribution on the big. The idea of Durand as the villain of the piece in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is certainly an exciting one, with the smart money surely going on Durand playing a gorilla.

The official title, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, was announced last month, with the first sight of the movie also revealed in the form of a piece of concept art. The sequel is set to be led by It star Owen Teague and The Witcher’s Freya Allan. The former will play the main ape, with the latter set to play the main human character.

“Planet of the Apes is one of the most iconic and storied science fiction franchises in film history, as well as being an indelible part of our studio’s legacy,” Steve Asbell, President 20th Century Studios, said in a statement. “With Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes we are privileged to continue the series’ tradition of imaginative, thought-provoking cinema, and can’t wait to share Wes’ extraordinary vision for this new chapter with audiences in 2024.”

The Maze Runner Director Wes Ball Will Helm Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes for 20th Century Fox

Not much has yet been revealed regarding the direction of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, but it looks like the sequel will pick up after the events of 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes. Way, way after. One thing we have known for a while is that The Maze Runner director Wes Ball will be at the helm, with the filmmaker assuring fans that the decade-spanning franchise is in good hands.

“We have a take. We have a way of staying in the universe that was created before us, but we’re also opening ourselves up in being able to do some really cool new stuff. Again, I’m trying to be careful here. I’ll say this, for fans of the original three, don’t worry — you’re in good hands,” Ball said back in May 2020.

He continued saying, “The original writers and producers that came up with Rise and Dawn, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, they’re also on board with this. Josh Friedman is writing this thing, a lot of the same crew is kind of involved. We will feel like we’re part of that original trilogy, but at the same time we’re able to do some really cool new stuff. It will be really exciting to see on the biggest screen possible.”

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will be released in 2024 and is expected to be the first part of a new trilogy.
