Starting next year, the MCU is about to start ramping up the jeopardy as it heads towards Secret Wars. Kicking off Phase 5, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will be responsible for delivering the first big step up the ladder for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and according to Kevin Feige, the film will be another collaborative entry similar to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. With the movie set to introduce the first dominant variant of Kang the Conqueror, we can expect something more than the typically fun Ant-Man outings of the past this February.
Marvel Studios revealed a huge roadmap last Saturday, unveiling not only the next phase of the MCU but also the opening and closing movies of Phase 6, which will see the epic conclusion to the Multiverse Saga. A big surprise among all this was the revelation that Phase 4 will come to an end this November with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which means that for the first time in the franchise Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man will have the job of opening a phase, and it looks like it is going to be a pivotal entry in the saga.
Speaking to MTV News after his appearance at SDCC, Kevin Feige discussed the reason why there are only two Avengers movies in the Multiverse Saga, and how movies like Quantumania will make up for that by being huge in scope. He said:
“So many of our movies now, the Multiverse of Madness, what you’re about to see in Quantumania, are big team-up films introducing big parts of the mythology and that Avengers films really should be the capper to a saga. Which is really all we wanted to to lay the groundwork for today, is say, ‘We are currently in the midst of the Multiverse saga which will culminate in two Avengers films.’”
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’s Trailer Was Released at SDCC
While Marvel did release a couple of new trailers, including the first for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 also had trailers shown, but both have remained exclusive to the event for now. For those in attendance, the revealed footage from Paul Rudd’s third solo outing as Scott Lang delivered a look at the movie, which in many ways did mirror Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Similar to how Strange spent a lot of time in the multiverse, Lang will find himself thrown into the Quantum Realm, where amongst other dangers, he will come face to face with a variant of Kang the Conqueror, who will waste no time in bringing an impending sense of doom to the Marvel Universe. While we are yet to see how the Multiverse Saga comes together, there are already plenty of theories out there as to how events will play out. For those with knowledge of Kang from the Marvel Comics, there are plenty of clues to be found, although as always, Kevin Feige and his team will be making some changes to ensure there are always some surprises in store.
