Julia Garner Cast as Madonna in Upcoming Biopic

Ozark star Julia Garner has been cast as Madonna in an upcoming biopic about the singer’s life. According to Variety, the actress took part in a competitive audition process that included stars such as Florence Pugh, Alexa Demie, and Odessa Young before finally landing with Garner. The biopic will require a skilled singer and dancer, offering the actress a platform to exhibit her vast array of talents. Madonna is directing the project herself and handpicked the star to play her in the role.

Following the initial announcement of the Madonna-led film, she said: “I want to convey the incredible journey that my life has taken me on as an artist, a musician, a dancer – a human being, trying to make her way in this world… There are so many untold and inspiring stories and who better to tell it than me. It’s essential to share the rollercoaster ride of my life with my voice and vision.” The story will follow Madonna’s early days in the New York dance scene to her status as the ’80s Queen of Pop. Universal Filmed Entertainment Group chairman Donna Langley won the script in a multi-studio bidding war, with former Sony Pictures chief Amy Pascal serving as a producer.

This isn’t the first attempt to make a biopic centered around the singer’s life. In 2017, a script called Blond Ambition, which was at the top of the 2016 Black List for unproduced screenplays, began to gain traction in the industry. However, Madonna denounced the project, taking to social media to express her feelings toward the script. She said: “Nobody knows what I know and what I have seen. Only I can tell my story. Anyone else who tries is a charlatan and a fool… Why would Universal Studios want to make a movie about me based on a script that is all lies???”

Now, Madonna is the one in charge. She can tell her story her way, with an actress of her choosing. This is the singer’s third time directing a feature film, following her work on the 2008 film Filth and Wisdom and the 2012 biopic W.E. Neither project was received well by critics or audiences, something Madonna hopes to improve on in the story about her life.

What Has Julia Garner Been Working On?

Garner rose to fame in the role of Ruth Langmore in Netflix’s Ozark, which just completed its four-season run in April. She won two Primetime Emmy Awards for her role in the series. In February, she teamed up with Netflix again for Inventing Anna, the story of Anna Delvey and the various cons she construed while in the heart of New York’s social scene.

Although her filmography thus far has a noticeable lack of singing and dancing, we can expect that to change in Madonna’s biopic. According to IndieWire, the actors had to go through “up to 11-hour-a-day choreography sessions” with Madonna’s personal choreographer, followed by sessions with the pop icon herself. Currently, there is no release date for the forthcoming film; however, we can hope to see it sometime in late 2023 or 2024.
