The rumors turned out to be true. Lady Gaga will star alongside Joaquin Phoenix in the sequel to the 2019 smash hit, Joker. The film’s title is remaining Joker: Folie À Deux, and a teaser trailer was released via the official Joker accounts and director Todd Philips and Lady Gaga’s social media. Watch the 18-second clip posted by the Grammy and Oscar award-winning talent below.
Rumors of Gaga’s involvement in the sequel began circulating in June, and it’s now clear her character will be Harley Quinn, the frequent accomplice and lover to the Joker. Expect director Todd Philips to create an interesting twist with the character and possibly ground her in reality more so than we’ve seen in previous iterations.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
Margot Robbie has portrayed Harley Quinn for the past six years since her debut in the 2016 film Suicide Squad. She followed that up with Birds of Prey in 2020, then the 2021 reboot, The Suicide Squad from James Gunn. However, Joker is in a different DC universe, and the use of Robbie would not only be out of place but would confuse fans even more. Lady Gaga has proven her acting abilities in the Best Picture nominee A Star Is Born, as well as House of Gucci, and American Horror Story.
Fans can see Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix share the screen when Joker: Folie À Deux hits theaters on its newly announced release date, Oct. 4th, 2024.
Lady Gaga’s Confirmation May Hint Toward the Musical Sequel
In June, rumors circulated regarding the Joker sequel being a musical, and Lady Gaga’s involvement in the film only seems to reiterate those claims. The initial 2019 film contained musical elements to the film, such as Arthur Fleck dancing in the bathroom following the subway scene. Then, after completely transforming into the Joker, he dances down the stairs with sheer joy.
We don’t know how a full musical would tie into Joker: Folie À Deux, and the rumors may turn out to be false, however, the groundwork has been put in place to make the idea work. Although far from confirmed, TheWrap reported that the Joker sequel would primarily take place in Arkham Asylum, which would make sense following the first movie’s ending. The last scene sees Arthur talking to a doctor, receiving treatment for his mental illness. As the credits roll, he’s killed the doctor and runs wild within the psychiatric hospital. This could very well be where Phoenix meets Gaga, and the two begin their journey in Folie À Deux.
Expect to learn more as the marketing and news continue for the upcoming sequel, releasing exactly five years after the initial Joker.
