Jensen Ackles Teases Batman Role in Mysterious Upcoming DC Project

Supernatural star Jensen Ackles has revealed, no doubt to deafening applause, that he will return as Batman for a mysterious new project. Speaking on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Ackles confirmed that he will reprise the role of Bruce Wayne AKA Batman, voicing the comic book icon once again in an upcoming outing.

“Yep. In fact, I just spent about three and a half hours in the studio yesterday doing, uh, doing Batman. That was a big deal. I don’t want to drop that ball.”

Jensen Ackles has been a fan-favorite choice for the role of Batman for some time, with the actor finally providing the vocals for the character in 2021 adaptation of the celebrated comic book run Batman: The Long Halloween. This was not the first time that Ackles had featured in a DC animated adventure, with the actor voicing Jason Todd in the superb Batman: Under the Red Hood before being promoted to the role of Bruce Wayne himself.

While Ackles does not reveal what the upcoming Batman project is, it is worth noting that we do not yet know who will be taking the title role in the animated series Batman: Caped Crusader. A reimagining of the Batman mythology, Batman: Caped Crusader sees the likes of Bruce Timm, Matt Reeves, and J.J. Abrams on board as executive producers, with Timm also serving as showrunner. Ed Brubaker was announced as head writer on the series earlier this year, with the show being presented as a spiritual successor to the seminal Batman: The Animated Series.

“In this new iteration, it’s just Batman,” Reeves previously revealed regarding Batman: Caped Crusader. “The Justice League doesn’t exist, there aren’t any other superheroes. You’re watching this lone figure swimming through the cesspool of Gotham. It’s Batman alone.”

So, could Jensen Ackles be taking the lead in Batman: Caped Crusader? While many are hoping that Kevin Conroy will be brought back into the fray, Jensen Ackles surely comes a close second choice. If Ackles is not referring to the Caped Crusader series, then fans can rest assured that they will hear Ackles’ voice emanating from under the cape and cowl once again in the near future.

Batman: Caped Crusader is due to premiere on HBO Max and Cartoon Network in 2023.

Jensen Ackles is Currently on Superhero Duty (Sort Of) in The Boys

Prime Video

Before he returns to the world of DC as The Dark Knight, Jensen Ackles can currently be seen on superhero duty (sort of) as Soldier Boy in Amazon’s The Boys. Based on the comic book of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, The Boys takes place in a universe where super-powered individuals are recognized as heroes by the public and owned by the powerful corporation Vought International. Outside their heroic personas, most of these so-called “heroes” are arrogant and corrupt, with the series focusing on the titular Boys, a group of vigilantes looking to keep the corrupted superheroes under control.

Ackles takes an integral role in The Boys Season 3, which finds Billy Butcher finally on the straight and narrow. Homelander has been subdued, and Butcher is now working for the government, supervised by Hughie of all people. But both men itch to turn this peace and quiet into blood and bone. So, when The Boys learn of a mysterious anti-Supe weapon, it sends them crashing into The Seven, starting a war, and chasing the legend of the first Superhero: Soldier Boy.

The Boys Season 3 is currently streaming on Prime Video.
