Jensen Ackles Says Soldier Boy Has More Daddy Issues Than Dean Winchester

Warning: This article may contain spoilers for The Boys Season 3

Jensen Ackles has played two very different characters with “daddy issues” in Supernatural’s Dean Winchester and The Boys’ Soldier Boy. When asked which of the two he believes has the deeper grievances with their father, the actor didn’t take long to decide which was the winner; Soldier Boy. Having played one of the Winchester brothers across 15 seasons of Supernatural, and now providing a narrative voice to prequel series The Winchesters, Ackles’ character always had a complex relationship with his dad, John, who was played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, but that is nothing compared to the messed-up nature of his latest on-screen persona.

While speaking in a recent interview with Variety, the subject of his two best known characters and their respective father-based traumas came up, and when asked which of them suffered from the greater daddy issues, Ackles claimed it to be “definitely Soldier Boy” without any hesitation. He explained:

“Oh, definitely Soldier Boy. He definitely had the worst father and has more deep-rooted issues because of it. With Dean, I don’t think Dean was ever looking, necessarily, for his father’s approval in the way Soldier Boy was. He just idolized his father in a way that was unique, given their circumstances, given the fact that they lived in a world that was much, much different than a relationship would be. Also dealing with the fact that his dad was motivated by revenge and he was John Winchester’s mini-me, essentially. He was his little soldier. I think it was less about his approval, and more, ‘This is what I’m supposed to do because it’s what my father taught me to do.’”

Soldier Boy Could Return Again In The Boys Season 4

The finale of The Boys Season 3 left many of the main players still alive and in play, which is a peculiar scenario for a series that has usually left some lasting damage in the wake of its season finales. While Black Noir met his maker at the hands of Homelander, everyone else survived the fallout of the episode, including Soldier Boy, who is now once again in containment. Whether he will remain there is yet to be seen, but with showrunner Eric Kripke desperation to bring Jeffrey Dean Morgan into the series, it would be terrible if he didn’t instigate a Supernatural reunion in the process.

Filming on The Boys Season 4 is set to get underway this summer, and Kripke previously commented that season 4 will be a very character driven affair, and there will be a lot of characters facing their “core issues.” He said:

“That’s right. That’s not a secret. We start shooting in late August. I’m starting to look at some early drafts of the first couple. We’re still early, I think right now we’re in the middle of breaking Episode 3 and I’m reading a draft of Episode 1. And even in that stage, it’s early with some heavy rewriting and we’re still in there figuring it all out. But it’s super interesting and fun and really, really emotionally rich. Probably as emotionally complicated as we’ve ever done. So far, that’s been my big takeaway. Everyone is really facing their core issues in a way that’s pretty exciting, a very character-driven season.”
